dragonfire,
YES, Flux your Wheelweights. I hope you flux outdoors due to the smoke and fire. I live on a farm and have an old haywagon in a three bay wagon shed. I use a Coleman stove and flux with candle wax from my church.
Adam
I first flux with sawdust, but no wax. I flux again in the casting pot with sawdust and bee’s wax. If I don’t have any dry sawdust around, I have been known to use Quaker Oats. I used to spend a lot of time fluxing ingots, but not as much now to save propane. However, I do a thorough job in the casting pot.
I use wood , sawdust , old oil , bacon fat , whatever is handy and the junk mail I would rather burn the credit card offers then throw in trash , best use for all that type of mail , outside and stay upwind .
I'm really liking bacon fat. There's always plenty, and when it burns off it leaves a crispy black foam like layer. That's exactly what we want, the carbon is what adsorbs all the impurities for us.
I pour generous portions of bacon grease into the ww before I even start the heat. It takes a long time to burn off so I don't use for final fluxing before pouring ingots, I use a wax for that.
It seems generous portions help everything melt faster by facilitating better heat transfer, fried to perfection.
I use Pine bedding that is left over from having hamsters. I also use broken crayons left over from when the kids were little.
