Very weird wheel weight found today...

So, I was smelting another batch today. Found a handful of Zinc that I missed during the sort, got them out before they made it into the pot.

So, this batch was pretty much all big truck weights.

Well, I dumped a bunch in the pot for the second round, let 'em all melt down, sawdust in, stir stir, thunk!

    What????

At the BOTTOM of the pot was a good sized COWW. I pulled it out. Let it cool, and low and behold, I could cut it with side cutters!!!

So, what is heavier than lead, softer than lead with a far higher melting point???? I remember test cutting this one in the sort, so it didn't get soft when hot. And I checked it again after it cooled. It turned a goldish color when hot as well, and has retained that hue.

I will post a picture tomorrow.

    Any thoughts?

sounds like a softer ww ie; more close to pure lead than the ww alloy , pure also takes more heat to melt , btw ? this thread is worthless without fotos :P

Ill get some pics up tomorrow. But this was NOT pure lead... It was plenty hot enough to melt pure lead.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further brotherhood of a man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

I think tungsten is more dense than lead based on it's crystal structure even though it has a smaller atomic weight. I remember reading that they put tungsten inside plastic weights sometimes.

Gold is denser than lead and has a higher melting point...

He said that it was soft. That rules out Tungsten which is very hard. Tungsten is also about 40% denser than lead.

My guess is lead or zinc coated with something dense, that let it blend in on a chrome wheel.
