At a recent class reunion in my hometown in Nov '13, I had a interesting conversation with a childhood friend of mine, who was in the Navy on a nuclear sub and now works at the nuclear plant in Monticello. He and many of his co-workers have been approached to go to Fukushima, he has been told that it's not nearly as bad as been reported. I guess the 'sales pitch' wasn't very convincing, no one that He knew, took the very lucrative offer.

Having been stationed several years near Nagasaki and bicycled all over the city regularly the early 70's, it became clear that if all I heard about radiation was true, I shouldn't be seeing what I was seeing with my own eyes. My guess is that what is happening around Fukushima is anti nuclear power hysteria for a political agenda. As is the case so often these days, the ability to measure scientifically far exceeds what is relevant in the real world. The ability for extreme measurement does create the ability to stampede the masses educated at the government schools to generate grant money from the taxpayers. This is also true with lead, mercury, and many other substances the greenies use to attack prosperity and capitalism. Follow the money.

From what I can see, the Japanese were not overly concerned about safety. They use Boiling Water Reactors and housed them in a steel building, not safe, just ask former residents of Chernobyl. Here in the U.S. our reactors are housed in concrete containment buildings, some of which are designed to take a direct hit from a 747 and not fail.

Fukishima Fun Facts:

How many people died? ZERO

How many people, including the "suicide team" that stayed onsite the whole time got
sick from radiation? ZERO, NONE - NOBODY!

What is the maximum exposure to radiation that any one of the "suicide team" at the
site? Equal to one year's normal allowable exposure for a radiation worker.

What is the radiation level in about 90% of the evactuated area around Fukishima?
The same as the radiation level in ---------- Denver, Colorado. Denver's background
radiation is slightly higher than other locations due to lots of granite around. Granite
rock is slightly radioactive.

These were ancient, 1st generation designs without 90% of the safety equipment on
new reactors and NOTHING very serious happened off site. Yes, you can MEASURE
radiation, but not at harmful levels over most of the area. Also, the levels that are
actually harmful need to be revised upwards a lot, the old/current limits are actually
quite incorrect and based on zero actual data, just filling in between actual data an
zero with a straight line. This area of exposure was disproved by an accident in
Taiwan.

Was this a good thing? Of course not, but most of the stuff written about it is hysterical,
nonsensical hogwash and propaganda by anti-nuclear activists.

YES - YOU HAVE BEEN LIED TO. It is far, far less of a big deal than the media says.

It is kind of sensitive, what they pay me to do. But I do have a
couple of mech eng degrees and about 4 decades experience in industry,
working mostly in the aerospace and weapons fields. Never actually worked
at a reactor site, but I have other engineer friends that built them and operated them,
and I have had some connections a few times. Very familiar with the
technology and ionizing radiation. I have spent time helping to develop
new detector technology to find 'bad stuff' in moving vehicles, testing at
the top DOE lab that is in charge of these detectors.

Regardless - the media is EXTREMELY stupid about radiation and reactors.

Use this as the yardstick. What do they know about guns? When they report
on a shooting - how likely is it that they produce the truth? Two reasons they
get it wrong ; 1st they are STUPID and IGNORANT on the subject.
2nd - they HATE the object so try to smear it every chance they get.
