    Today at Scrap Yard

Went to get some lead to smelt and ended up bringing home more than I set out for. The one surprise was how many more WW were zinc & iron compared to previous trips. They have a lot of their smaller stuff like WW in 4x4x4 boxes and allow me to pick through and only take what I want so I don't bring home any iron or zinc. The box with pure lead was full of small isotope containers and a few large ones. The price for pure has gone up $.10 to $.70/lb and WW (coww & soww) .35/lb. Brought home 177lb of pure and 111lb of WW for $160.00. I'll be cooking lead tomorrow.

Nice score there. Good price too. So cali isn't as bad as NJ I guess. Another member here, the poor guy got held up at the scrap yard for $1.00 /lb. I guess you can get robbed just about any where these days !!
The last scrap lead I got was $.44/ lb for soft sheet and coww lead. Not to bad. I would have paid more. Tire shops here are almost 30% lead and rest is steel, alum, rubber. Almost no zinc in last bucket.

    Merry Christmas. Mike

I stopped at the first yard that actually allows sales. Well, they were going to do me such a favor at $1.25/#. I politely said no thanks and will continue the hunt.

    Btw, nice score.

The scrap yards around here won't sell to the public at all. I did pick up about 100 lbs of solder and plumbers ingots at a junk yard for .40 lb!

I found a small local tire shop that sold me a full bucket of WW for the same $.20 per pound as local scrap yard was paying. So $30 for 150lbs (plus $6 for a dozen donuts). Will have to see about the yield but a casual look showed a fair amount of lead. Will probably check a couple more places to see if I can score another bucket after I sort this one. With the couple hundred pounds of plain lead I already have should hold me for a long time.

Have not enquired if local scrap yard will sell, do know they sell steel bar, channel, angle etc. Would be interesting to find out if they will sell, and if so price and ability to sort WW before I buy. Would not surprise me if they would want going price for lead to sell me hand picked WW's. Currently about $1 a pound.

Look for independent shop. I think it helps if the shop sells used tires. More older cars go to those shops. Good luck.
