    Question ER Shaw Rifle Barrels

    Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with ER Shaw barrels?

I am in the process of building up a new switch-barrel Savage 110.

My youngest son will eventually end up with it.

He thinks the helical fluting on an ER Shaw barrel is really *cool*.

I am wondering more about the quality and performance.

Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Blkpwdrbuff

I've had several Mausers rebarrelled by ER Shaw and have been very satisfied with them. Fluted barrels are not my thing and I won't comment on them as this is a matter of personal taste.

I have used them on various rifles and have no complaints.

Have not used the fluted yet but they should shoot.
You will get comments from folks that don't like them for one reason or another, but they shoot if attached right.

Shaw barrels have a good reputation. As far as fluted is concerned, I was under the impression that it was a way of making a 'bull' barrel the same weight as a standard taper barrel. I may be completely wrong. To my miserly self, it is an unnecessary extravagance. (did I spell that right?) Some of them look okay. Supposed to shoot well.

Shaw barrels are not winning and bench rest matches, but they are as good or better than any factory barrel.

Used one on the mauser action to build a 280 for my oldest son. Top notch quality and great accuracy. You can't go wrong using them.

I have them on P-17 Enfields in .338-06 cal., M98 Mausers in 7mm and .308 Win, on a Mosin Nagant in .416 Russian Express. I have put the straight fluting on a .338-06 Enfield to reduce weight. On a 98 Mauser in 7mm i had it done for a lighter rifle to tote. All are very accurate rifles.Robert

A hearty "Thank You" to everyone who replied to this thread.
    Just a little heads up.
I have ordered a barrel from ER Shaw.
Now I just have to sit and wait for it to show up, give it to my gunsmith to have it chambered (ER Shaw does not chamber for the .17 Javelina), and install it on my Savage action.

    Thank you again!

I have a few Adams & Bennett barrels that I believe were made by Shaw. All shot well right off the bat. I have one shaw barrel on my 223. 14" twist. When first installed it wouldent outshoot the wore out factory barrel I took off. A few rounds down range it started shaping up. By the time I had a hundred rds it shot very well indeed.
I wouldent hesitate to buy another. I would go into it knowing it might need a little breaking in.

I've sent emails to shaw twice in the last two weeks about buying a barrel. They didn't respond either time.
I'm not sure what to think.

    Wolfer,
By all means, call them on the phone.
After they received my order, they called me on the phone to confirm the order.
And this was on New Years Eve, no less!!

Shaw barrels have a good reputation and seem to be good barrels. Fluting has several aspects that should be considered 1st is wieght reduction. Fluting reduces the blanks wieght while maintaining the stiffness of a heavier countour. 2nd is added surface area for improved heat disapation, the added surface cools faster. 3rd is depending on how its done it can change balance point on a rifle making it easier to hold on target. We only have the one fluted barrel here, but it is a very good shooter. Was a real 600 yd performer for her.

A man would need to be a far better shot than I am to need better than a Shaw.
