    Two-Piece Barrel and Chamber

Has anyone seen or done this? A separate chamber screwed onto a barrel? I'm thinking of doing this - fitting a spare 22lr barrel I have lying around to a chamber to make a cast boolit shooter. I'm not sure whether to go 30-30/22 or 303/22. It's for a Lee Enfield action.

Most 22rf barrels are made up from steel that is much less stronger than the barrel your Lee Enfield is made out of.Twist on a regular 22rf barrel is about 1x16" and bore diameters are smaller than those used for let's say 223 or 5.56mm. Back in the old days Springfield armory did make 22rf barrels on Springfield actions and some of the experimenters also chambered them for the 22 hornet. Both bullet diameters of .223 and .224 were made I think in the 40 grain range for use in the 22rf barrels. But if I'm not mistaken the barrel steel used in the Springfield barrels was ordnance grade steel like they made the regular '06 barrels from. So maybe you might to use a newer made 22 centerfire barrel for your project. This way you could get a faster twist 1x12 or faster for CF bullets. Hope this helps. Frank

You're talking about an adapter to shoot .22 inside a centerfire barrel?

Enfield actually made such a thing; a rifled .22 liner that slid up inside the .303 barrel, a bolt head with an offset firing pin, and a magazine.

Mauser made a similar device for the Model 98 as well.
