    Pattern control wads questions

I got about 3k of these with a bunch of AA hulls along with a Mec Grabber.

I'm still new to shotshell reloading, but I wanted to know if I could use these to reload 525 Lyman slugs or .69 round balls , and which wad loading data should I use?

When I try to fit the wad and slug in the barrel it's VERY tight and I didn't want to whack it in there. Definitely not going in with finger pressure..

Can I substitute lead shot data or stick very strictly to 525 slug data?

Which claybuster wads are best for the 525 slugs, since many of the wads in the Lyman shotshell reloading manual have been discontinued and the CB replacements have been modified in a way that won't work well with slugs.

That old looks straight walled and I bet the lyman will fit nicely. I posted several loads recently tested with the lyman 525.

It's tapered for the AA hulls and they fit nice and tight, and the 525 fits perfectly. I'm waiting on a round ball mold so I can cast up some dead soft lead to slug the barrel.

How much overbore is safe for sabot + slug?

    I dunno about the slug.
but it works well in the gold medal hulls with bird shot.

    1) fill the base with hot glue
    2) use a 20 ga hard card in bottom of wad cup

you won't be overbore unless you're shooting a choked barrel.

Hogtamer, I have a question on the hot glue. I am trying a minie in a cup for my 220 savage. I have read about the issue of skirt collapse when a HB boolit/slug is put into a wad cup so that no powder is pushing the skirts out.

In your opinion, is hot glue the best way to go?

Has anybody just tried filling the hollow base with COW or grits and then sliding it into the wad so that the cup base keeps the COW in place? Low tech but cheap.

In your opinion, could base pressure cause the cow and skirt to expand and obstruct the forcing cone?

Don't mean to hijack, maybe I need to make this question a thread.

    rh,

I use modeling clay to fill the bases of my fosters slugs as well as my lyman 350(20ga version of 525). All the slugs I have recovered still have the clay in them and show no or minimal signs of skirt deformation.

The modeling clay is cheap, easy to use and in my opinion effective.

Goose, do you let the clay harden or just load it while still soft? Powder issues if still soft (humidity in the shell)? thanks rch

Modeling clay is different from play-doh and other types of clay...it doesn't dry out. I never used it directly against powder but in a wad for the 350 and seperated by gas seal and cork wad for my fosters and i have never had issues.

This is the brand i use.

not much cheaper than the small hot glue sticks and gun. cools pretty quick. overfill and trim flush. would be wary of putting moisture in slug (clay of any type.) The COW or grits will compress and defeat the purpose.
