    .323 thru a Lee .314 sizer-Too much?

    I bought a zip-loc bag of (50) sized .312 150gr CB's. (flat base)
Or, so the tag said !!
I pan lubed them with 50/50 beeswax/vasoline,and was going to run them thru my .314 sizer to get the excess lube off.
    Fit reeeal tight !
OOPs, better check with the caliper... Hmmm...323
Anyway, I noticed the driving bands were nice shiney and round...and at .314"
Shouldn't be Any problem sizing the rest and launching them downrange in my SMLE, right??
Lube grooves still evident and strong..
Will Sizing that much do anything detrimental to the boolit ???
    My SMLE is a .3125"

    Thanks

I'd sure try them over maybe 6 - 7.5 gr of Bullseye and would bet they'll shoot pretty well. I run 323471s and 323470s through the Lee .314 sizer to PP them back up for use in 8x57.

I bought the 8mm Karabiner mold thinking that it would fit in my 8mm real nice and when it wouldn't work, decided to try a little sizing experiment. I sized them down to .310" and they looked real nice although the noses wouldn't fit anything I have. I put it away but remember thinking how nice they looked. I think the secret is to have lube in the grooves and they can't collapse on you. Learned that on here of course.

I'd probably not do it in one step- perhaps .318 then .314, but otherwise should be fine. 9/1000 of an inch is a lot to swage down but in absolute terms is what, the thickness of a hair? A piece of paper?

Razor.... You are in the position to answer your own question, the old fashioned way. Shoot them and see what kind of accuracy you get and then you will know the answer and can share it with us.

You are not going to do any damage to the rifle and I would bet accuracy will be better than you think.

    Report back please...

I size, lube all the grooves and GC a Lyman 323470 in a .325 then push it thru a Lee lapped out to .315 and shoot them in a 91/30 that slugs .314.
Taken it down .010 in one pass doesn't seem to hurt em.

I didn't really feel that I had screwed up too bad.. but giving my level of "expertese", I was wondering if there wasn't something I was overlooking..

I intend to answer my own question on Thursday...using Larry Gibson's load...
    I will post results then..

I recently purchased the Saeco #632, a tapered boolit, from 313 at the nose to 321-322 on the base. I ran them through both a 314 and 310 dies. Sizing them was prety heavy duty work. They shot fairly well for a plain base boolit that'd had the crap sized out of 'em. Since the mold was advertised as a 314 with no indication of taper, I returned it and have an RCBS 309 150 grain Cowboy mold on the way. Yeah, they'll size down and shoot, but I'd rather not overwork my equipment.

................I did this several years ago for a 1909 Argentine cav carbine with an outsize bore of .303". I could deal with the .314" groove okay but none of the boolit moulds I had would even approch that on the nose. My Lyman 314299 would go barely .302" and it naturally shot the best, but the group was larger then I like to see at 50 yards.

I did bump the nose in the lube-size die to expand the nose a bit right at the ogive, and those I didn't discard for being bent shoot better yet. What to do? A Loverin when lubed up sizes down pretty easily, and I had the Lyman 323470, so I figured I might be able to size them down to .314" in a Lee push through.

Those I had were .325+ and I lube-sized them to .323". Then I sent them through the .314" Lee die. Short story is they shot great. Maven submitted an article on sizing to "The Fouling SHot", magazine of the Cast Bullet Assoc. After I'd reported on it (on the old Aimoo board I think) he tried it and it worked fine for him also, so he included it in the article.

    THEY WORK GREAT !!!
    Best group/load yet...
    4 rd grps
    7/8" center-to-center at 50 yds. 3 rds and 2 holes !!
    6.5 gr AA2
Didn't have any BULLSEYE, but ACCURATE ARMS 2 was the closest on the burn rate chart, that I had on hand.
    Thank you LARRY GIBSON !
    I tried 4 different loads of AA2, from 6.0gr to 7.5gr.
The 6.0gr and 6.5gr loads were the best at 1 inch and 7/8 inch, respectively.
    I think the largest group was 1 & 1/4"...
Maybe there's hope for me yet...
Time to do some more research to duplicate/improve the results.

P.S. That bag of boolits was a 50/50 mix of .323 and .312... Same design but 2 different sizes..

Been doing that for years for Mosins.

Have to size them with an arbor press or vise.

I open the case necks up with a turned down, tapered 3/8" capscrew.

Also put bullet in empty casing and chamber to get OAL minus .030". Different for each rifle.

    Push with 55gr H4350.

Use a bore snake every 5 or so rounds while barrel is hot, & get very little leading.

    Works great for me.

Thanks for the heads-up there Mandrake..
I've got a 91/30 PU I've been wanting to play with, and I just happen to have some H4350.
    I went OAL -.010...
