My dad's 30-06. I was maybe 10 or so, he was zeroing it in. 100 yds one shot. A quarter inch off center, slight left. Bruised right shoulder for a day or two. Didn't think it had that much recoil, yeah I saw the cartridge, just underestimated the boom. 6 years later I shot it again, and it didn't feel like enough boom. It is my least favorite, and my most favorite.
I've come to realize I love big booms, when I expect it, and lots of recoil.

I've had a few... interesting experiences.

When I was about 10, I was scouting deer blinds with my Dad. He was carrying is 12ga double just in case a bird decided to present itself. After a while he asked if I wanted to try the shotgun. To help me hold up the heavy gun he found a big log that I could stand in front of to brace my legs. I aimed at a tree and pulled both triggers. My dad caught the gun. I went over backwards and flew about 10ft. No need of another lesson in the power of a firearm.

I once had an M1 Garand double on me. For the second round the stock is slightly off your shoulder so it gets up some momentum before hitting you.

I hunt out west with a 30-378wby. Recoil isn't bad but the sound level is aweful.

My 375 H-H Ruger #1 and 416 Rigby Ruger 77 are what finally convinced me to start casting. It's just too expensive to feed them j-words once you add in the cost of 100gr plus in powder.

The one that irritates me the most is my Browning 5.5 Target. Mediocre accuracy (my Dad's 1967 standard version is better), and the complete inability to dissassemble it for cleaning after it's first range session put me off. The barrel screw was galled into the aluminum frame from the factory. Browning custome service was rude. I paid for repairs with a local gunsmith and put it away. It's been out of the safe once in 20 years.

250s are plenty. Too many of those in a row and the hand hurts
for a few days due to deep bruising. It is totally a tool - self defense
against large predators when backpacking. For those that don't know
the gun, this is a 26 oz .44 Mag revolver.

Amazingly, hot factory load in a S&W 342 are not quite as brutal, but
still completely unpleasant - high velocity smack in the hand. I can do
it, but it is unpleasant. This is a 10 oz .38 Spl +P revolver. I have
turned down the opportunity to shoot a 340 with .357 magnums, which
is the same gun with a slight frame stretch, about 11 ozs ... not enough
mass in the gun. Great to carry, though.

I could have written this post. I agree with every word of it.

I had to get rid of my 329. The cylinder would unlock and spin with 300 grain boolets.

Ouch, I never have been able to think of a practical purpose for a shotgun with only a pistol grip.

How about a 500gr. cast boolit at 1900 fps.
3 shots was all I could do.

My cousin's 357 derringer is the worst I can think of at the moment. It kicked like a mule and was useless for accuracy past belly distance.

I once had a Win 338 custom made. Monte Carlo stock with a lot of drop and a 1/2' peace of Goodyear rubber for a recoil pad. Was out sighting it in one day by myself of course. Couldn't see where I was hitting.
Hey there's a milk bottle cap I'll shoot at that and see. KABOING cut a .338" grove eight inches long in the hood of my old Dodge truck. Never did see where the bullet went, curved around under the hood and out? That was a long time ago hope I learned better.
    Kicked like h--l sold it.

I shot a not a very good friends 8mm mag once left snot boogers hanging out in mid air. I got back at him . We set a can behind a small tree and I said My savage 99 308 would shoot through the tree and hit the can and his 8 mag wouldn't. So I slipped a armor peirceing round in shot through the tree. His factory rounds wouldnt. Free beer for a month on friday nights. That took the soreness out of my shoulder .

I'm not sure what the ATM backup is, but if it is anything like my Ruger LCP I completely understand. Most ignorant gun I have ever shot. If I ever have to use it for it's intended purpose though, I doubt I'll notice.

I have fired almost everything from a 17 HMR to an Eight Inch Self Propelled.

I have two, that really hurt me. Just like Jimwill48 & Whisler: AMT 380 Backup. Hurt my hand! (I got rid of that evil thing)
The second is a 357 COP. Hurts like H%%% with full 357 mag loads, try using 38 spl, it doesn't reset the hammer, so you keep pulling the trigger like Russian roulette, never knowing when it will go off (keeping it, because it's different).

Just an FYI, I like shooting my 45 Win Mag Lar Grizzly and S&W 500!

Encore, 15" Pistol .45-70, 500gr, 1300fps. Fun to shoot during the range session but the next day feels like a sprained thumb.

Also a 20" Katahdin barrel in .45-70 on the same Encore frame in rifle form, 450gr, 1500fps: just dandy offhand. Horrific off the bench.

a 5.5lb single shot is still really cool.
