    what have I got??

    Hey guys,

I have a bunch of moulds given to me some years ago...Altho, right now,I can only find two...

Anyway, I hope someone can tell me the good, bad, and ugly, about these two.

    1. Ideal #225 415, with 504 stamped below that.

    2.Ideal # 311414, with 602 stamped underneath...

And thats it, thanks in advance...........Caspar

Ideal (and Lyman) use a numbering system where the first 3 digits of
the six digit mold number are the expected cast diameter in thousandths
of an inch. Some of the older molds seem to use the bore diameter the
bullet is intended for. For instance there are some molds that started out
as 308XXX and were later 'renamed' to 311XXX. The second set of three
digits is the number of the bullet design, just sequential.

So you have a bullet for a ".22 cal" firearm and a "30 cal" firearm. You'll need
to go to the web site for mold info to get the weight, and look at the
design to see what it might be used for.

If it was easy, anybody could do it.

    wow, that was quick...

one more question, what would these be worth, in good to exellent condition?

I'm sure not going to use E-bay, for a price source...

Don't guess I ever saw a cast .22 bullet before.......

    Thanks again guys........ Caspar

    Goste:

And the small numbers - which should appear on both blocks of each set - are "match numbers" to keep the pairs together after cutting, through finishing and packaging. The #225415 was originally designed in 1929 for the Niedner ".22 Baby Hi-Power" and is a popular 50-gr. flat-point gas-check design still in the Lyman line. No. 311414 (1927 - 1967) was a 150-grain Spitzer gas check that "Fits the throat of the .300 Savage. Designed after the factory bullet", with a very short bearing surface to match the short case neck of that cartridge. [Both quotes from the 1958 First Edition "Lyman Handbook of Cast Bullets."]

It's a nice coincidence - but nothing more - that these have consecutive "cherry numbers" (unless the former owner was a number junkie like me).

The 311414 was designed for the 300 Savage and is a fairly uncommon mold. The 311413 is much more common. I'd hold onto that one as finding another might be somewhat difficult.

Value is in the eye of the buyer. A single cavity common mould in good condition would probably start at $20-25.00. A double, $25-30.00. Thats without handles which would add $10.00+ to the price. Keep in mind thats ballpark figures. Find a 358009 or 323378 double cavity in fine shape, or better yet in a 4 cav, or one of Lymans Perfection adjustable moulds and the price depends on the buyers current net worth and credit rating.......
