I've been wearing LL Bean rubber-bottom hunting shoes for elk in the mountains for 30+ years. I have several pair. One pair is a 'two heavy wool socks and a felt insole' for down to about 20* then I have a pair of thinsulate insulated LL Bean rubber-bottoms with a felt insole fitted for 2 pair thick wool socks take me down to -15 /-20. If the snow is really deep, 14" or more I wear a pair of insulated bogs with the 'Tractor Tred'. I avoid the Vibram soles due to excessive noise, crunching, breaking twigs and pine cones. Never found the Bean shoes to be particularly slippery, the soft rubber grips slick rock quite well. Warmer weather, dry conditions' just a pair of comfortable work shoes - Justin Round Toe Lace-ups or if wet a Bean rubber-bottom shoe. Tried some others, leather insulted by Danner, Wolverine, RedWing but keep going back to the Beans for the quiet.
