    lyman sabot slug question

Anybody ever put an 1/8" nitro card on to of Lyman slug and roll crimped it. The nitro card should open the roll crimp and keep the petals from getting destroyed.

Hello Jason, by putting a .125 thick nitro card on top of the slug you are taking chances that the slug might ride over the card and if your barrel is one of those thin smooth bore might cause a bulge, how about putting the nitro card below the slug to give it a firm base and by doing so raise the slug a bit to help open the fold crimp and not mangle the wad petals in the process as they are trailing behind.

BPI sells a clear breakable plastic disc for just that, look into it.
You will need to put a 1 inch square piece of plain paper on top of the powder to stop powder from seeping through:

Look what the burning gases will do if you do not put the paper:

In the olden days, ALL shotshells had that top nitro card and were rolled crimped.

The card was printed with the shot size so you could see what was in the shell without looking at the box.

I can't remember a single time anyone ever had a problem with that top wad. After a big dove shoot, the ground would be littered with them but that is about all.

Of course, it wasn't anywhere near an eighth inch thick. Just thick enough to hold the shot in the case during the recoil of a 10 or 12 gauge shotgun.

Hello WilliamWaco, yes its ok to use a thin overshot card with shot and even I use to use one years back with sabots like this to get a better fold crimp:

I've never heard of what SBS is saying, but I would think of it as safe. I have done the same with the Lee slug for that purpose.
May you hands be warmed on a frosty day.

I need the same advice too!

Hi all… I am enjoying reading this thread as I have had similar questions. I simply do reload regular bird-shot shells with Lyman Sabot slugs (Pour out the bird-shot, replace with slugs cast from same birdshot which I cast with my Lyman slug mold. And then roll-crimp.)
I have had some good accuracy out of a Mossberg 500A smooth/ cylinder bore. (At least groups of 7” at 38 yards/ 115 feet off-hand, elbow supported. Bead sights.)
I did notice my wads are all torn up.

So just like Jason above, would I be very wrong to use the plastic over-shot card on top of my slugs to help open the roll-crimp so the wad petal lips don’t even contact the shell wall/ lip?

Would I be risking high pressures?
I would imagine that this plastic disk would more or less fragment, and thus not cause any hazard when fired.
    How do you guys read?

Good morning, you need to use WW when casting Lyman 525 slugs water quench them to make them harder as at launch the slugs expand at the base cutting the petal base from time to time based on the slug hardness.

I used a very thin over shot card in the picture above to keep the fold crimp from caving in as the slug did not support the crimp from below due to a narrow maplet.
The good thing about Lyman is the big Maplet and it will help support the fold crimp much better from below, choose powder that will not take up all the hull space for fold crimp and try using 3 inch hulls.

    Best regards,

Maybe turbo will chime in and give us some more input. Looks like he has been doing this for a while.

I been casting them from pure lead and noticed the petals being destroyed. Gonna have to cast some with ww water dropped and try them. Thanks for the info.

    SuperBlazingSabots, good point...

I thought about that very phenomenon myself: especially since the slugs I fired had a plastic ball in the cavity (Just like the Federal Tru-Ball Slugs.) So obviously: the skirt expanded and cut off the petals.
I do not have access to anything more than soft lead (Re-cast Bird-shot) and I may have to continue with that. What I have done is to use a smaller ball now, so it is not the EDGE of the skirt that expands on firing... The ball just serves to avoid wad being scrunched up into the cavity, and avoid skirt collapse.

    Check this out.

With this, I plan to use a plastic over-shot disk, roll-crimped.

    What do you guys think?

Good idea and it should help, Y-man.
    Try fold crimping next.

    Thanks Ajay,
No fold-crimping equipment available. Maybe I will work on fabricating one... (If you see my old posts: you see I do not have any access to the equipment and materials that many have...) But I was able to get the roll-crimper, and my Lyman mould on overseas trips. So I have to make do with what I have.

If what I have planned for roll-crimp will work, I will stick with it.

This is why I have RESPECT and ADMIRATION for you guys on this forum, and I cherish being a member here.

    (A prayer please, for Kenya.)

I've been casting these with ACWW and all my recovered 12S3 wads look fine--petals intact.

If you quench pure lead it hardens the casting--I don't know how much though. HTH.

there was a thread on here about filling the base with ''hot glue''
I haven't tried this yet and am working on another idea for the sabot it self
life getting in the way [mom's health issues]has kept me from the shooting bench

    Doc.
