Tried a slightly stronger load of IMR SR4759 today .... 26.5 grains with a Winchester Magnum Primer under a 405 grain PB bullet, giving 1,378 fps with an extreme spread of 37 fps (9 shots). My first and last shot were called flyers, slightly high and to the left. Unfortunately, i do now know which two holes in the target they are. I'd like to say they are the two in the upper left corner of the group, but I just do not know. Even so, this load is a good one in my own opinion (shot with a 123 year-old Winchester Model 1886 using a tang sight). Here is the target (shot at 100 yards) ....

Bill, I will once I have decided on the load i will use. I'm getting different windage between 5744 and SR4759. I might shim the tang sight instead. I find that is easier for fine adjustments than trying to delicately tap the front sight over about .002.

Just an FYI Powder Valley has SR4759 at this moment.

KirkD - Thank you for the fine photos and load data. Some very good info for loading 45-70 and using SR4759. I am using 28.0 gr of SR-4759 with the Lyman 457122 with very good results. That being two white-tail bucks in the bag. Nice post.

I've recently come across 9 lbs. of SR4759 and already had good luck in the 30-30 and 308
So I figured why not give the .45-70 a try. Marlin 1895 is the rifle, and the Lee 405 HB over 30gr is the load.
Should be a nice pleasant load from what I normally shoot out of this gun.
I hope the accuracy is there. Bummer they are going to quit making this powder as I just discovered it.
Guess that's what I get for being a snot nosed kid (I'll be 40 this year)

    Waco,

Please post on your load development with the lee 405 HB and SR 4759 in your Marlin 1895. Does your LG have Ballard or MG rifling?

BTW, I am your age plus a couple of decades and I just "found" 4759 a few months ago. Age does have its benefits though because I found a lot more than 9 pounds.

Ok, so what are we going to use when 4759 finally bites the dust? I'm thinking Blue Dot or 2400 might do it although Alliant powders slower than 7 have completely vanished here. Ironically I've seen more 4759 on the shelf recently than ever before. Powder is too scarce and expensive to be using 50+ grains of a slower powder just to make trapdoor level loads.
    Currently casting and loading: .32 Auto, .380 Auto, .38 Special, 9X19, .357 Magnum, .257 Roberts, 6.5 Creedmoor, .30 WCF, .308 WCF, .45-70.

Use of magnum primers especially the CCI magnum primer in 30-06 jacketed loads doesn't really increase the velocity. But I have found that it gives better consisentsy in these loads. Basically at the present 165 ballistic tips with 55.5 grains IMR 4350 and the CCI magnum primer. Chrono's velocity 2800 fps. This isn't just one rifle that I have found it out with. two pre 64 winchester match rifles and a sako 75 all in 30-06 and with almost identical powder charges. Frank

I know several folks that use 5744 for reduced loads in larger CF rifle cartridges. Supposedly it ignites consistently, I don't know I have only loaded about a 1/2 pound of the stuff and don't have an opinion. There is some load data for 5744, but it is kinda like trail boss in that you get a reduced velocity but not a reduced pressure.

I'd prefer not to use 5744. It costs $5-8.00 more than the others and there are many pictures of blown up guns by knowledgable reloaders. These may be due to double charges but it still makes me very leery.

In the 45-70 I use 24.5 grs. of IMR 4759 and a 300gr. rnfp 2" at 100yds 1886 win carbine and I'm sure it will kill anything that needs killing.
If you really like IMR 4759 you better put your order in now because they're discontinuing it this year, there last shipment will go out in June 2014

I found another pound of 4759 yesterday at lgs. I will probably go back to R-7 when I cannot get more. I'm shooting the RD 460_350 over 29 gr. 4759. I also have the RD 460-420 but don't shoot it much. Oh, Marlin GG.
