When it was $3/lb I bought a 4 lb keg. At about 25 grains a round, it took me a good while to shoot it up.
Then I used 1 lb cans for a while. I finally bought a 5 lb can and it cost $98 on sale several years ago.
I use it mostly in the 45-70 (more than one) and a 40-65. Results are uniformly excellent.
My rifles are strong enough for smokeless so I load a black powder velocity equivalent load. Then I increase the load if required until the unburned grains disappear. Usually that increase is 1 to 2 grains.

Thanks EDG, I HAVENT chronoed any of my load just yet. How fast are you able to sling them from a marlin so far?

I've used it a bunch under Lyman 311290s in '06 USGI cases in my SA 1903. Nice and pleasant to shoot with a clean burn, no left over burnt/ unburnt powder residue - Bill in MA

I shoot single shot 45-70s and never go for speed. I shoot mostly for accuracy with heavier bullets and they have too much recoil to go very fast with.
SR4759 is about the same burning rate as IMR4227 so you can pretty well match anything IMR4227 will do.
Speer manuals have reduced loads of SR4759.

I used to use the Gould 330 PB with 31.5 grains of SR4759 in the first Marlin 1895CB I had with very good success on paper and deer .

I use RCBS 405 GC/30/4759 in my Marlin levergun and it shoots very very well.

I use 27 grs of 4759 with a 300 gr RNFP @1400 fps from a Magma mould for chickens, pigs, and turkeys in lever action silhouette from my Browning 1886.I use 33 grs with the same bullet for rams @1700 fps for rams.Mostly because it 's only 20 clicks from the chicken zero at 50 to 200 zero for the rams.
26.5 grs with a 405 F lee is good out to 200 too in the 1886.
This load works in my rolling block also. 300 is as far as I've been able to shoot it but I was really happy with it.
Back in the early 1970's a fellow in his 60's told me that if a 45/70 wouldn't shoot with 4759,it wouldn't shoot.I think he may have been on to something.

23-24.5 grains under a Lee 340 or Ranch Dog 350(?) works fine for me in original 86 and Rem. RB.

Thanks fellers. looks like this is gonna be my go to powder. so far im having a heckuva lot better accuracy than 5744 . So far for full blown "Hammer of Thor" loads, X-terminator Has been grouping very well with J-words but i just cant get excited with that copper stuff! lol. Surely its a passing fad. This year (Lord willing) ill be Hunting with only cast for the first time. looking forward to seeing some great performance.

FWIW I started with SR4759 and had very nice results . Later I went to XMP5745 with gas check bullets in the 45-70 and had even better results . Later still I went to H322 for a bit stouter and I might add a touch more accurate . In the last 4 or 5 years I did almost as much work with several 45-70's as u did with the 444's . And in that time I found H322 to be my go to powder in the 45-70 with GC bullets from 300 grains to 550 grains . As to Xterminator I just started messing with it in the 444 and do far it seems to do as well as H322 , XMR2015 , IMR8208 and RL-7 .

When I can find 4759 I'll try it for sure. Now I'm having fun with 405 gr boolits ahead of 10 gr Unique in my 1902 1886....more bang for the buck right now.
Seems the "dealers" are using the shortage to reap some lost revenue by inflating prices. I'll help them out......to a point.

I have have an good, low pressure, accurate load using 26 grains of IMR SR4759 under a plain base 405 grain bullet for an average velocity of 1,301 fps at around 75 degrees. At around 38 degrees, the velocity drops to an average of 1,248 fps, but it is still very accurate.

Took my original Winchester Model 1886 45-70 to the range yesterday to try out a variety of loads, including one using IMR SR4759. The old '86 was shipped in 1890, has a standard 26" octagon barrel and a pretty good bore, at least 8 out of 10, with no pitting. The rear sight is an original Lyman tang sight as shown below ...

The load was 26 grains of IMR SR4759 under a 405 PB bullet, and a Winchester Magnum Primer. I find that the magnum primers don't seem to give any significant increase in velocity, but they do seem to give a lower extreme spread in muzzle velocity. I infer from this that the magnum primers result in a more consistent powder burn.

Judging from some other loads I fired using 5744, I think that I would improve accuracy with my SR4759 load if I increased the velocity slightly to around 1,330 fps. I plan to try some 26.5 grain SR4759 loads perhaps next week if time permits. Here are the results, with each target showing a five shot group at 100 yards.

I think it is more useful the TrailBoss and at lower pressure.
Totally agree with that especially in the larger capacity cases- and I'll include 5744 along with 4759 because they are so close in burn characteristics, application and results.

I agree as well. My best 5744 load was 26 grains of 5744 with a magnum primer, under the same 405 PB bullet for 1,341 fps and an Extreme spread in velocity of 19 fps at around 64 degrees F. I only fired five shots with this load and it gave a tight cluster of four shots into 1 & 7/16" and a flyer that opened the group up to 2 & 7/8" at 100 yards. I want to do some more shooting with this 5744 load and raise my SR4759 load to a similar velocity.

Yes Sir ... 16.5gr SR4759 and the old Ideal 311413 'Squab' 170gr bullet in a 30WCF will send it accurately out to 500 meters - with accuracy!
