OK guys looks like the 2nd project will finish up early next week so that means the 358 build will start soon.

The next big question for the build.

Barrle length: I want to keep the barrel 20" or less, what about a 16" or 18"?

What you all think?

It is your funds and your rifle so just build what makes you happy. But I will say that I did some reading Ok allot of Reading lol. And found that with a 20" barrel the .358 Winchester is happy. But if you wish to have an 18" barrel there is nothing stopping you from doing so. As I do not think you will loose enough FPS that the game will be able to tell. Plus if you are going to be shooting Cast BOOLITS then really you will probably not be giving up anything in the FPS department to even worry about.

As of right now my little pitter patter is set on a 20" barrel but..... wasn't sure about the other offerings out there.

For me personally I like my 20" barrel. As really unless you make things long it is a pretty handy size. When you consider using a short action and not having the butt of the rifle to long and a 20" barrel you are in business. But for tighter quarters I do not think an 18" barrel would hurt.

I just picked the 20" barrel length as it would still be handy and efficient with the .358 Winchester cartridge. Mine is a 1-14 Twist.

I had 20" barrels and went back to 22 and even 24" barrels. My 358 will be 24" to start and if I want I'll cut back to 22" as my first 358 was - probably the perfect length.
Remember you can always cut off but it's difficult to 'cut on'.

Finaly got some extra cash (Christmas was rough) to order some reloading dies and holly cow Hornady dies went up to $70.99. They were 64.99 in December but was back ordered, I know its only $5 but dang, once you add shipping its a $80 set of dies.

Why go with Hornady instead of RCBS?

RCBS is still out of stock only thing in stock is Lee and Hornady and the Hornady just came in last week.

On Saturday I put out a WTB post for 358 win dies. Had a reply and fair price in 2 hours, for a set of RCBS! I need a neck die to complete my set. Hope to be shooting my Stevens, Shaw barreled, .358 Winchester in Feb, THANKS for the help.

Well this thread has been dead for awhile, but there is progress now.

Just picked up a new Savage Model 11 in 243 win from the local Gander Mountain that is closing it's door. Has the 20" barrel that I wanted with nice wood on it. Left a message with Jess so hopefully he will be giving me a call back later tonight.

Talked with Jess the barreled action is boxed up and is going out later this morning. His turn around is 2 weeks or less so that's great news for keeping the project moving.
