Lyman Sabots...First round of testing complete!

    Hey guys,

Just finished shooting 25 rounds loaded with the lyman 525 (actual weight was 505 gr) grain pure lead slug out of my winchester 1300 rifled deer barrel. My load was 42 grains of blue dot and a WAA12R wad, seated with around 40 lbs of pressure. This load managed 4" groups off shooting sticks, and 2" groups from a solid bench rest at 50 yards. Not too bad I guess for my first ever batch of cast bullets.

Next batch is going to be using a downrange WAA12F114 clone and universal powder.

    vandeusenps:
    Welcome to the CastBoolits.
That is some good shootin. The Lyman slug is very impressive, for a couple of reasons. First, it looks as though the engineers put a lot of thought into the slug design. If you compare the older slugs and the Lee key drive slug, one has to wonder why would anyone bother with these latter two designs. The Lyman slug, just plain looks like it will shoot accurately. The slug is aerodynamically superior, just in its shape. Then, the designers engineered the slug to have a smaller base diameter to fit in the bottom of the shot cup where the petals get thicker and to be the proper OD top to bottom to fit the bore.
My first results were as yours, very gratifying. I didn't even bother with the Lee slug or the other old standard hollow base slugs. After starting with the round balls, I went directly to the Lyman slug. I haven't been sorry. I have read numerous threads and posts, reporting how bad the groups are with the Lee slugs. I guess they would be ok for up close and personal work.
Good to hear of your success with the Lyman slug.
    Regards
    Jack
