    Cast Round Balls

    I used a TC mould to cast fifty caliber round ball. Question is the load charts state 180 gr round ball---but mine weight out at 140 {app} Whats up?? Thanks

    Assuming you are casting a .490 Round Ball for your 50 and not a .457 You must have a lighter alloy or are casting with voids...

    Have you measured them?

    Sounds to me like you are casting .45cal or using zinc/tin and not lead.

    Sounds to me like the wrong size or an air gap. I don't think the alloy could have that much difference without noticing the alloy is not right before hand.

    Out of curiocity I measured some made from WW's and Lee moulds they averaged

    .308 44g
    .440 127g
    .454 140g
    .490 176g
    .575 284g.

    Also most of these measured a couple thous. over their mould size.

    Something doesn't feel right about the .919 = 1167 grains and 1.052 = 1750 grains....

    Maybe it would help if I posted the formula for determining the weight (in grains) of a pure Pb round ball*:

    1) Determine the volume of a sphere: Diameter cubed (D x D x D) times .5236.

    2) Multiply the above figure by 2,873.5 (the weight of a cubic inch of pure Pb in grains).

    3) The resulting figure is the weight of a given diameter pure Pb RB in grains.

    We have an EXCEL workbook in the book called LEAD BALL WORKBOOK.xls that will calculate the weight of any ball of any material of any diameter.
    This is available on http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/CB-BOOK/, in FILES.
    This question prompted me to add the ability to calculate using other alloys.
