    Hey Jim,
Just reading through all of the "Sticky" threads trying to absorb all I can before delving into BBDTPC method. Since the OP wanted a method to measure abrasion I thought I would share one metric that could be used to measure effectiveness of a lubricant under a given load.

I didn't even realize I've been coating bullets for a couple of years now. Crazy.
Disclaimer: Reloading and casting I only look at cents/round and ignore any other costs

I just found a cheap Goodwill toaster oven, and bought some HF red. I tried the piglet method, but I have to do two coats to cover all the lead. Am I doing something wrong?

Yes. You using the old piglet method. Try the new and improved dry tumble BBDT method!

I get perfect covering with just ONE tumble/shake. No liquid mess.

    Read the stickies.

It isn't unusual to have to do two coats to cover with Piglet method. You aren't doing anything wrong.

The new dry method has pretty much replaced Piglet, and works well for most folks. Good luck and Happy Coating!

I tried the dry method, and got pretty much the same results. I'll have to make some more adjustments, I suppose.

Keep shaking until the bullets are FULLY covered. You don't want to see any shiny spots of lead showing through. Its likely you are not shaking / swirling them long enough or not using enough powder. Keep inverting the bowl and tipping it at different angles while shaking it to move any powder off the bottom of the bowl onto the bullets. I use a teaspoon of powder in a margarine bowl and two large hand fulls of bullets. This will usually coat 2 to 3 batches of bullets with one teaspoon of powder. Are you using the BLACK BBs? I tried the white BBs and they don't work as well for me.

I played around with this voodoo method for months. (Read the stickies to follow my path!) At first I could not get it to work either. But after playing around a lot, fine-tuning several things, and discovering the hard up & down final step, all is well. I get 99% coverage every time.

Remember: ONLY the tops of the grease bands are the important coverage part. AND PC does run and fuse together as it melts and cures, so little bare spots WILL fill in. Check it out for yourself. You should have no bare Pb on the tops after baking.

    Keys to success:
    BLACK bb's
#5 bowl (round is best I have found)
    hemostats to pick up boolits
    NSAF on the racks
    VERIFIED 400F convection oven (best)
Baked boolits pass the ultra-hammer test (pounded to a cube)

Now.....your humidity can and WILL cause poor static charges. I have found that when our RH here in the desert gets up around 40%. Many of you guys live in very humid/wet areas and will have troubles with BBDT at times. Keep dessicant drier media pouches in your powder jars and bowls.

Swirl HARD for 30 seconds or so. The HARD up and down for at least 12 seconds. That final step is very important to getting a full coat. Tap any excess of on the side of the bowl using your hemostats B4 setting on the NSAF tray.

There are MANY variables involved with this. And there is not one set of "cure-all" directions for everybody. It is up to you to play around and find what works for your area, your tools, and your needs.

Or just buy an ESPC gun. I have 2 of them and they give perfect coats every time.

I managed to get another batch done. These are the best yet. Just a couple of exposed spots, otherwise, the coating is good and thin. I pounded one down and the coating didn't peel.

you'll have to review the piglet method as outlined here.
not too many are still doing it that way.
most use the dry method Jim outlines or the spray gun.

I've read up on it some here.

If it's fallen out of use, I won't bother with it.
