Would anyone care to share some favorite loads in 44 Spl or 44 Mag for the H&G 503?

Of course there is the famous Skeeter Skelton load of 7.5 gr of unique for every day use in .44 SPL. I also use 5.2gr of Trailboss for plinking...also .44 special. These loads are for the #503 Gibbs mold or its clone...they follow Elmer's specifications exactly for a .44 spl/mag bullet..yea I know the .44 mag didn't exist when Elmer designed the bullet.

    The Best Keith

I think this Boolit is the closest to what Elmer Keith intended. Lyman reduced the diameter of the front drive band and both Lyman and RCBS shortened the front band in order to clear the beginning of the cylinder throats. The reason being, if the front band wasn't sized to the throats there were chambering issues in some guns. Elmer took his design to H&G. Elmer sized .429 which would have fit the throats of earlier guns so that having the front band in the throat may have been his intention. My S&W 629 has longer chambers but in both my Redhawk and Anaconda the front drive band of the H&G503 is just inside the cylinder throats so there is no jump. It's already there. The heavier front band may also help engage the rifling and the deep crimp groove offers a place for boolit metal displaced by the lands. The lube groove is just the right size.

I size .431". which works for 3 guns. The Redhawk has it's original .432" throats / 429" groove. The Colt throats were reamed to .431" to work with it's .430" groove. The S&W throats were also smaller than the groove and were reamed .431", with a .429" groove although the front band doesn't touch the throat and would never have been an issue.

I water drop everything supersonic. 96/2.5/1.5 approximately Alloy.

    Mag Brass 19g 2400 / 150 Fed, 6" S&W629, 1200-1270 fps depending on Powder Lot Number.

    Special Brass 14g 2400 / Fed 150, 6" S&W629, just under 1000 fps

    Any Brass 5.5g Clays / 150 Fed, 6" S&W629, I'm guessing 700 fps

    Ruger/Colt Only
    Mag Brass 22g of 2400 / Fed 150, 4" Redhawk, reaches 1500 fps.

19g 2400 H&G 503 offhand 25y. I think there would be just one hole if I were one of "Those Guys".
