    Memorial Day with the M1

A beautiful day today, and my tradition for remembering those who have served and sacrificed, is to go to the range with a military rifle. My M1 Garand is often selected to make the trip, because it is so much fun to shoot.

And of course cast boolits are the ammunition selected. This load is the Lyman 314299 sized to .311. They are loaded over 31 grs of IMR-4895 with a tuft of Dacron and a CCI #34 primer.

Let the fun begin! Some 100yd targets.

Always a good time banging away with the M1 Garand rifle.

Many thanks to the veterans reading this for your service to our country.

    What vintage is she?
I keep trying to stay afloat but can't help from shooting holes in my own boat.

Rifle is a Springfield Armory built in the early 1950's. I bought it through the CMP, one of the service grades. I enjoy it.

    Nice rifle.
I wish I'd bought one several years ago. I'm pretty sure all the decent ones are gone.

Better than just decent M1s are still available at the CMP, but if you wait much longer they will be gone. Rack Grade are $525, Service Grade are $625, H&R Service Grade Special (like new metal, new stock) $925, and Special Grade, completely rebuilt rifles in 30-06 or .308 are $950. My Service Grade is better than any rifle I've ever seen at a gunshow and for far less money.

Just got my M1 from CMP on 5/10/13 ordered on 2/10/13. It's a H&R service grade and is pretty nice. Took mine to the range also on Memorial Day. Better get them while you still can, they are a functioning and fun part of history.

Thanks for sharing Vly! I got my CMP 1943 SA SG last fall and I love it. Now I just need to find more time to shoot it more often.
