    Question Infrared Thermometer for Casting?

    hi Guys and Gals;
I get stupid sales mail from Harbor Freight
and in todays mail they have an Infrared Thermometer,
and it reminded me about our need for a Thermometer for smelting & Casting
has anyone used one for this?
not just the HF junk but any of them will they work for it?

if so what do you use and why?
if it's a Infrared Thermometer, who's brand and why? (Price, avalb, quality, ect)

    Please chime in on this,
as we have nothing at all as of yet
and it would be handy to have a tool
we can use for more then casting around here
Sean and I also wanted to do some Blacksmith work here
as we have a pile of old Horse Shoes and auto leaf springs
so aimming at a tool that can do more go me started

    Ok
    TIA
    Patrick

Nope, though it is a really fun tool, it will not work for casting. There are a couple of videos on youtube showing an actual lead thermometer and an infared on the same pot and the infared is way off.

Here is a link to a thread about this the last time the topic came up:

My summary: Useful for some things, but not for checking pot temperature. There are better thermometers for this purpose. Don't waste your money if that's what you planned to use it for.
