Hi Guys,
Just made a 410 roll crimp without a lathe.
Looked at other methods you guys were making them and came up
with this idea, easy simple and just a bench drill and hacksaw and metal file and 8mm tap.
Materials used 24mm dia mild steel round solid bar 1 inch long, 8mm bolt with shank(high tensile)
and 8mm nut and washer.
Firstly take the 24mm round bar and drill a 6.8mm hole striaght throught
it, in the centre of course, next drill a 12 1/2 mm hole throught 3/4 's of the lenght of the round bar, using the 6.8mm hole.
Next tap the 6.8mm hole that remains in the 1/4 of the bar with a 8mm tap.
Next cut the 8mm bolt so that you have 2 inch of it, 1 inch threaded and 1 inch shank. Place the shank piece in a bench drill and using a vice for a rest file 3 screw threads off the end of the threaded part, untill you get down to no threads on it(so the end looks like a dog screw).
Place the threaded part of the cut bolt into the 8mm tapped part of the round bar, but be sure to put the nut on first and a washer too.
Screw it in untill it sticks out into the 12 1/2mm by about 4mm, tigthen nut and its ready to use.
I think this is the easiest way to make one and no lathe needed.
You can alter the deepth the bolt goes into the steel bar to get your own perfect roll crimp finish, but remember to file off more thread if needed.
A normal metal drill will give you the bell end finish when you drill with the 12 1/2mm drill.
You can alter the lenght of the round bar so you can have a shorter roll crimp.
Note on the pics i also drilled a 16mm hole too, so i could get the 410 carts in easy, just i am tall and i found it easier to use.
Gun blacked the main part so you could see better.
Hope this saves people money and remember you can use this method on any gauge, just take time to work out the measurements.
