    Help I.D. This Boolit...

    Are these hollow base wadcutters?...

    Swaged or cast?...

No lube—just shoot ‘em this way?...

Got them from a purchase of reloading stuff and they came along for the ride…

Can’t seem to find data for them and the 357 Magnum. Probably just use a starting load for a 148 grain full wadcutter?...

    Thanks…BCB

I'm not 100% on this but this does resemble the thing.

they are swaged holleow base wad cutters. made for light target loads in .38 spl. a heavy load in a .357 would blow the bases. now they do make a good defense load in .38 loaded backwards with a heaver charge.

Probably a swaged HBWC. Toss in some thinned LLA and you are good to go. I found ~6-700 similar but knurled and did the same thing.

Sorry about the response I posted, I guess I'm drifting.
My post has nothing to do with the hollow based dilema.

I believe Hornady swaged HBWC have knurled sides. There must be some waxy coating on these bullets as lube so load 'em light and shoot. I would think about 3.0 gr. of Bullseye would work...

If you can't find 357 loads, use 38 Special target loads, if starting at minimums add 0.1 or 0.2 grains to compensate for the larger case.

Those look like some I saw a few decades back, something like Alberts Bullets, if
    I remember correctly.

They were swaged of dead soft lead, coated with a waxy lube with graphite. I'd
stay at about 2.8 gr BE or TG with those in .38 Spl.

Your idea to match starting load for 148 HBWC is right on.

I would have thought the same thing as far as a BHN of 5 for pure lead according to the SAECO scale…

My SAECO tester indicate a SAECO hardness of around 3 which equates to a BHN of a bit over 6—still probably close enough to be nearly pure lead…

Ken Waters did an article in his Pet Loads column in the September 1976 issue of Handloader strictly for the 38 Special and wadcutters…

I suspect I can start with the 38 Special data for the 357 Magnum…

I wonder if I should seat them flush with the case mouth, or maybe seat them out as far as possible so they are even with the front of the cylinder of my old Security-Six…

Probably won’t be much testing as I only have about 100 of these critters and I doubt I will pursue finding anymore of them—but maybe other HBWC if they shoot well…

    Thanks all…BCB

This looks like some Zero bullets I got a couple of decades ago. I would seat them flush with the mouth - that's the way the factory's did with their target ammo, and they knew what they were doing. Two point eight of BE and press on...
And I would not try to make self-defense loads with these, by seating them backwards. A stout load of powder might blow the base off, through the body, leaving a stuck obstruction. It hasn't happened to me, but I've heard warnings, and I don't do it.

2.7-2.8 gr Bullseye in 38 Special cases. Classic Bullseye target load for those boolits.

I have been looking as some reloading data for the WC boolit in the 148+ range and I have found one bit of information a bit strange…

The RCBS Cast Bullet Manual #1 shows a maximum load for the 38-148-WC in the 357 Magnum at 3.2 grains of Bullseye…

For the same boolit in the 38 Special it shows a maximum charge of Bullseye at 4.5 grains…

This must be a misprint or incorrect data?...

Since the 357 Magnum has a case capacity of approximately 10% more than the 38 Special, is it acceptable to consider a maximum charge for the 357 Magnum would be 10% more than the 38 Special for a given powder—at least in the fast burning range of powders?...

I am planning on using data provided by Ken Waters in his Pet Loads article I previously mentioned…

    Thanks…BCB

load em backwards and have some fun with gophers/prairie dogs! I think I used 2.4grains of clays in my .38 special. I still have well over 1k of these to load from a trade I did a few years ago.

Probably a misprint. I would guess the figures got reversed. Apply the 357 data to the 38 and vice versa.

Looks like zero hollow base wad cutter to me. My friends and I shot them by the thousands in combat matches back in the 70's and 80's. We used bulls eye powder 2.7 or 2.8 gr. We tested them with more powder and they went all over the target when we passed 3.1 gr. Think the higher pressure was blowing part of the skirt off the hollow base.

I'll bet that these are Alberts and I vaguely remember the Taurus name, too.
Should work fine with moderate loads. Apparently too hot a load will have the
skirt blow out as it exits the bbl and ruin accy.
