You need to buy and aluminum mold and keep that one to just look at. Also did some more shooting with the new .44 Keith hollowbase this morning in .44 Special loaded with 8 grains of Power Pistol. First time I have used this powder and I really like it. Groups from a 4 inch Model 24 Smith ran around 1 1/2 at 25 yards with several cutting each other with in each group. The alloy measured a 14 hardness on the LBT sized .432. No lead and clean barrel no powder residue, using 50/50 lube.

Initial shooting with the 45 mold is proving to be very good indeed. Need to do more shooting with it and to stretch the distance out some but first impression is it's better than any other Keith bullet feed through this Bisley.

    an observation;;
I have heard it said in a Keith design the shoulder does not do any work in creating the wound channel
I think it depends at least some on the deign of the Keith
In using the 410459 since the 70s on 6 deer and many groundhogs
normally the entrance hole looks like a cookie cutter- as it does in paper- with around a thumb size hole in heart tissue--less in the lungs but still larger than .41 cal
I have a saeco 230 gr Keith also and so far I have not shot anything with it--but in paper it acts like a LFN with a nose diameter or so hole--
the difference between the two is not just the meplat but the nose on the 410459 is much smaller at the base of the nose where the nose meets the front shoulder
The saeco has a much larger nose base at the shoulder
the observation is that the shoulder on a 410459 can help in the process of wound development
-- and would seem that in a swc or Keith with a smaller diameter of nose to shoulder-- the shoulder can help in making the wound --
does it matter no--but it was fun to observe though

I have observed, on paper targets only, different results also. From one mold with a very small but sharp shoulder the effect is a clean cut full diameter hole. But from another mold with a large but slightly angled step to the shoulder the hole is fuzzy and small. Nose profile, if it may have any influence, in front of the shoulder step is more of a RN shape on the first and of a TC shape on the other.

I'd be interested in some 45 colt load data for the new 45 mold. The highest I can find in manuals is 250 gr boolits. I like titegroup and Unique

In older 45 they go up to 260g & 300g with Tight Group
In Ruger and FA they go up to 360g with Tight Group didn't see Unique

It only goes up to 250g
You can right click and "save as" then use your photo viewer to blow it up to a useful size

    Help on the 41 Mag

Looking for some information or legend on the 41 Keith or maybe Keith’s designs in general.

Got my NOE RG HP mould so Just had to get a 41 mag for it – S&W M657-1

Cast up a few to test fire.

The Dillon conversion showed up so started setting up.

This is a new caliber for me. I did more than my normal amount of checking measurements.

SAAMI OAL for 41 Rem Mag is 1.590”

    S&W M657 Cylinder is 1.675”

Brass cut to .020 under max and boolit seated for case mouth at top of crimp groove OAL is 1.675”.

Rim is 0.060 so that gives about 60 mils from meplat to front of cylinder.

I haven’t read it that I remember. It looks like Elmer designed this boolit to stretch the OAL to max for cylinder to get max case capacity. That makes sense to me with his penchant for getting the most he could out of anything he packed.

May also be why his 357 design locks up some cylinders. If a cylinder were counter bored for an enclosed rim I can see where the problem would arise. Haven’t tried my 357 RG HP yet.

So input input input (5 Alive)

Just loaded up some Keith Hollow Bases in 38 Special. Gonna try them in the Colt Officers Match. Will load for 357 Magnum later and try them out in the S&W 686, but I don't see any trouble with nose lenght when crimped in the groove. (The old S&W model 27 may have too short a cylinder.)

I ordered an NOE Elmer Keith Signature Series in 41 magnum, 412-237- SWC PB Keith,
for Christmas, I read the above post (417) and couldn't pass on it . It's a work of art. So far I cant bring myself to use it , it sits on my desk and I look at and fondle it . It's too nice to get dirty . I guess I'm going to have to get another , regular unsigned one if I want to shoot that boolit.
Don't see many moulds for the 41 magnum but I know Elmer did have one or two revolvers and helped get the 41 off the ground and into production so this is a fitting tribute .
