    #1 Buck

    Howdy Howdy !

Just wondering is anyone can share their experience with using #1 buck in 2.75" remington hulls ?

Specifically, 9 and 12 ball loads.

I'm having great luck with an unbuffered 12 ball load using an sp12 wad and HS-6.... was wondering if there would be any benefit gained using buffer.

    Thanks !

    Larry,

I used a cream of wheat buffer in a 9 pellet load and it dramatically opened up the pattern as compared to no buffer at all.

Using 21gr Unique and a Claybuster F114 wad with .310 dia buckshot in Win hulls.

In the 1970's I used to stack 15 into a Herter's wad designed for 1.5 oz shot. It was thick walled. Herco was the powder, but I cannot remember what it was. Patterned them, and the wad, would be about the diameter of a basketball at 20 yds.

Just loaded some AA hulls 2 3/4 " with 20 pellets for a 1 5/8 oz load. 32 gns hs6, Bpi universal base wad, Teflon wrap, buffer and a shot card. With the Teflon wrap (cut in 1/2) 4 pellets make a perfect stack. Let you know how they shoot tomorrow.

Just out of curiosity- did you weigh your 20 pellets, or ?

Edit : NM, mine are slighty larger than true #1, and it always confuses me- carry on and let me know how it goes !

I've done 16 with a gas seal and nitro card- but never 20 !

Pellets 33 - 35 gr each. I just shot those loads and they kick like a mule. I'm trying to get a consistent 50 yd load! Out of full choke I only got 4 pellets in 16" circle, 1 on 8" paper. Got some work to do but I suspect 25 yds would be adequate.

    Try no choke !

If you can, take out your choke tube, and try and do your 4x4 stacks in it.

if you can't, all you are doing is swaging flyers for the distance you are going for, I would think.

This is why I ended up with 3x3 stacks- and they patterned a lot better.

Load too hot I think...blowing pattern. Will regroup with another charge but out of powder now of any kind.

Shot again today, a couple of different loads with # 1 buck. Bottom line is I can't get a decent pattern out of either of my guns even with different chokes. Got good results with 12 pellet OO loads though, so that's what I'm going to stick with.

Are you shooting 3" or 2 3/4" to get 12 00 pellets in the hull?

2 3/4 using Bpi gas seal as a base wad over 30 grns HS-6' Teflon wrap in the hull, 4 stacks of 3 - 00' buffer topped w/ 16 ga shot card, crimped. Looked great till I patterned them. What I found today was my best pattern yet with any buckshot, though. 19 grns clays in straight wall hull, a VP 65 wad from Bpi (called something else now) that will hold 8-00 or 12 # 1' buffer, shot card and crimp. These seemingly light loads were the best groups @ 50 yds I have found, including a variety of factory loads. The VP 65 wad is deep and thick for steel shot, not split all the way to the top - worked great.
