    Grains per pound ? ?

    A little confused
Just opened two new cans of Dupont IMR4064.
When I say new, the cans are 1976 but were unopened.

First can I loaded 40 rounds at 49.5gr., there is only 2755 grains left.
I thought there was 7000 grains to a pound.
    This only comes to 4735
Checked other can, both have same amount in them

Also there is some dust in the bottom of the can, .6 of a grain, kinda brown.

Are you sure it had never been opened? Did you weigh the can of powder before you started using from it? Is the can marked one pound? There have been containers of powder of less that 16 oz. (7,000 grains).

I always check the weight when I find an older can of powder, sometimes if the weight isn't right of the powder is a different color, I pour it in my compost pile, great source of nitrogen.

    I just bought 2 cans.
Seal was still on them and owner said never opened.
Other can has same amount in it.

I bought some norma r1 , before I realized it was half pound cans . pound is 7000 , so if both cans have same weight and are marked as a pound , scale is off , or cans were filled at factory and the scales were off there

    Cans are marked 1 lb.
I know that my scale is not off, I check it regularly.

    powder gathers and loses moisture.

imr powder also has a real solventy smell.
that is because it is made with solvents.
guess what happens to stuff like acetone and mineral spirits over time.
they are like solvents and they have a tendancy to evaporate.
I doubt you lost @ 3 oz's through evaporation though.

Sealed metal cans? I have 15 year old cans of ether that haven't evaporated. Can't think that acetone would have gotten away if the OP's cans were really sealed. Curious.

That sounds strange. Maybe they included the can in the weight hoping you wouldn't notice

Well if your scale is good , and you have already said that it is , then when it was packaged their scale was off . As it would not have lost that much weight that consistent in all the cans .

Well I am starting to think I got shorted and the cans were opened before.
I don't think the seller did this intentional. The cans are 37 years old, maybe he used some a Loooooooong time ago and forgot about it.
