I am loading up my first Lyman 525s, can I get a safety check

So am am about to start loading up my first lyman 525s and my first 12 gauge loads

you have all been so helpful and I was hoping for a little more advice

I have chosen 2 loads to try out. One intended to be a low recoil all day shooter, another to be a full power load.

I first chose wads based of VdoMemorie's pic that I love of the 525 in all different slugs

I like the 12S3 and the Versalite because the top of the wad comes up to the middle or the slug "rim" without going over the top. This is important because I want to roll crimp.

the low recoil load I chose was based off a bird shot load from the alliant site.

I chose this load because it says the pressures are only in the 7000s, 16 gauge card and slug in the wad

the full power load I chose is the real one I have questions on because it is a mix of a few different recipes but I fell it should work and be safe.

Fiocchi unskived hulls
Fiocchi 616 primers
38gn of blue dot then work it up from there
Federal 12s3 wad with a 16 gauge .125 card
roll crimp

any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated

Good morning M27, welcome to this wonderful family of slug shooters, first of all do not load or fire that load of 38 gr of Herco unless you want to be kicked like a mule and want to visit your dentist, secondly you will need a gun with bull barrel to survive shooting that load and come home!

Most shooters find 32 gr load just fine for hunting and some push it a bit further to 33 or even 34 gr.

I prefer to have my slugs stick our a bit so it can help open the fold crimp without mangling the petals, this way you get better combustion and need a grain or 2 less powder for the same velocity!

That nitro card helps give the slug a firm base at launch and further helps with the slug separation

here is yet another step towards improving accuracy fir instant separation


Lyman 525 does a wonderful job of cutting a clean big hole, due to its big maplet

38 grains blue dot is a little light. Do you have a Lyman shot shell reloading book? Using a win aa with a 12r red wad shows a charge of 44 grains. With some 3" hulls you can go up to 50 grains.

M27...I've used 34 grains of Herco with the Lyman 525 slug resting on a 20 gauge .125 hard card inside a Federal S3 wad in a new 12 gauge Fiocchi 2 3/4" hull that's roll crimped and shooting such in my H&R Ultra Slug Hunter, a heavy single-shot with a rifled barrel. That's just about as stout a load as I want in that USH and it kicks just about like a factory load in my lighter Remington 870. This load would be more recoil that I'd want in my lighter Remington 870. This load shoots about a 3" group at 50 yards off the bench and has accounted for several deer, all pass-throughs so no slugs were ever recovered. As always, YMMV.
