ID:	63846Just got done with a Model 12 butt stock. I am now a believer in LinSpeed oil. I have always used tung oil and Truoil on my stocks in the past and have been pretty well satisfied. Well, I had ths water damaged Model 12 stock come in. The heel had set in water so long it was bleached out for about 1 1/2" up the toe. Once I got it stripped and sanded down, the rest of the stock had a lot of figure. Reached for the TRuoil and there was not enough to do a complete stock. Sitting next to it was a jar of LinSpeed that I had ordered from Brownells a couple of years ago. I thought what the hell, I can always strip it down again. Started in per directions and something became immediately clear. This WAS the finish used on old Super Grade stocks!! Had that same color and glow. After 10 coats, cutting to wood every 3rd coat, I had a beautiful piece of walnut!! Too bad about the bleached toe. Just thought I would share this. If you want any pictures, PM me with your email. I don't know how to get them up on here, sorry.

The one time I re-finished a stock with Linspeed oil (a M94 Winchester) I sat and watched the finish slough off as I sat with it in a driving rain storm I got caught in. I hope you have better luck than that!

I vote for linspeed oil hand rubbed allowed to dry good, light steel wool and then another coat until the pores of filled up. Also whisker the stock with steam or wet cloth so the grain will comeo ut. be safe

The last ones I have done I used 100% tung oil. I use a cut off piece of leather belt for the hand rubbing to save the skin on my hand.

Glad your stock came out nice. Bringing something back to life from the junk heap sure is a rush. I have often thought of those buffers you see for shoes and dream of having one for buffing wood stock finishes. Yup, I am known to try short cuts.

This thread is no good without pictures.
    Some times it's the pot,
    Some times it's the pan,
It might even be the skillet,
But, most of the time, it's the cook.

I've come to the conclusion over years that the kind of oil makes little difference, and that it's all in the technique of the refinisher. Only use straight linseed now. The expensive "magic" oils have had me.
