    Talking

    David, two things:

    1). Start collecting checks - we're there, even if 25 haven't yet committed;

2). You're near the Black River in Northern NY? I worked there for the Morrison-Knudsen Joint Venture called Black River Constructors on the Fort Drum project back in the late 80's.

Really nice people in that area there!! I lived in the trailer park constructed just South of Theresa, NY and occasionally walked into Theresa for a cold one at Sam's Grill (Free Beer Tomorrow!). Also been known to hang around Watertown, in the general area of Jasper's. Great place for lunch!

    Add Idahoser (Thanks Junior!)

I'm a total newbie, never cast anything before, have done some reloading a while back. Do have a 94 30-30.

First, Add me to the list and tell me where to send the check.

Second, please be kind to the new kid and tell me what I just bought?

    Idahoser,

You just paid around $56.00 for a Lee six cavity mold to cast a 31141 cast bullet, right purdy looking thing of which there are pictures further back on the thread.

Better make sure your wheelbarrow is in good shape and the tire is aired up because you will need it to move boolits from near the lead pot to over by the lube sizer

    Nice. NOT Hollowpoint, right?

Went googling the bullet and found this. I take it we are NOT doing the HP to our bullet, right? What is the weight of our bullet?

Also, can you tell me either where to go find a primer on all the stupid questions, or tell me why I would care about gas checks? I guess I get what they are, but WHY would you want or not want it?

    Idahoser,

Nice handle, WELCOME to the board.

First as willbird said, you just bought a world famous Old style Lyman 170 grain nose bore riding flat point. Great for a thuty thuty. Its in a 6 cavity mold so you can pour em faster than you can shoot em. I can pour over 500 in a half hour, but I think I am the oddball.

The gas check is for velocities over 1200? Depending on who you are, but this is a Rifle boollit, so for me a gas check is a must. It keeps the barrel from leading at higher velocities. I like to shoot my rifle boolits over 1600 fps so they do not cross over the sound barrier on the way to the target. This could decrease accuracy.

Gas checks keep the powder from burning the base of the boolit. They can also scrape out any lead that was left from the last shot. They make for a nice consistant flat base that helps accuracy. They can also prevent gas cultting of the boolit which will cause all kinds of havoc, all which are bad for accuracy. It makes em sort of like a Jack*t*d boolit.

Again, Welcome and thanks for ordering. You will not see this mold for months, so after I post that I am taking checks, send yours and forget about it. In a while and i don't know how long that will be, you will get a nice shiny new 6 cavity Custom made mold in the mail. You will also need a set of handles for it, avialable from midway or midsouth for less than fifteen bucks.

    Thanks David.

Sounds like I'll have PLENTY of time to decide how to proceed, but when I'm ready I'll have something I'm glad I got.

It may very well be that I'm not ready to start until this mold arrives, but I'm thinkin on it anyway.

Glad to see we're about there, I'm definitely in. I know it'll make Junior happy, he's how I got here.

As to why you would NOT want a gascheck, that would be if the intended purpose of the bullet may not need one. Most of what Elmer Keith did, or said he did, he did with plain based lead/tin alloy bullets.

Rifle bullets I want gas checks on, pistols generally not.

    Idahoser welcome

Hey Hoser, glad you made it over here! I consider the 311041 to be the Model 94 30-30 bullet. It was surely designed with a 30-30 case neck and chamber in mind. Just use plain ol' wheelweights for alloy, and don't worry about stuff like water quenching or heat treating, etc. Use plenty of lube on the bullets and load for 1900 fps or less muzzle velocity and never clean your bore again.

One hint: get the copper out of your bore before you start shooting cast.

You'll also find that the Lee 6-cavity mold is heavy duty and is a fine piece of craftsmanship. I suspect Lee takes extra care with these special order molds. Either that, or the guy who makes them is proud of his product. I suspect both.

In addition to mold handles you'll need a box of gas checks. I suggest getting a Lee .309" push-through sizing die. You'll need a sturdy press mounted on a sturdy bench as it takes some force to push a .311" bullet through a .309" die.

Install the gas checks by hand on the base of the bullets. Then lube them with Lee Liquid Alox. I run them wet through my push-through dies. If you run a non-lubed bullet through a push-through die you'll only do it once, I guarantee!

The bullets sized and gas checks seated, lube them again. Let them dry, then load. Basically, there's only two things different about loading cast vs jacketed: (1) Bell the case mouth slightly so the mouth doesn't shave lead off the bullet as it's being seated. I use the Lee Universal tool. However, the nose of long-nose pliers works just fine. Stick the nose in the case mouth and push down and turn. (2) You'll have to occasionally check the seater plug for lube build-up.

Speaking of seater plugs, a plug for round-nosed bullets works just fine on my 311041 flat-nosed bullets.

Heat source for melting: to start you can use a ladle and a cast iron pot on the kitchen stove or on a Coleman stove. I use Lee 10 lb bottom-pour pots. One for ww alloy, another one for pure lead for muzzleloader and other below 1200 fps loads. Only thing I would change if I had to start over is I would buy 20 lb Lee bottom-pour pots.

Warning! Don't let even a drop of sweat fall into a pot of liquid lead! Keep ANY source of moisture several feet away from your pot!!!!!!
