I have some new found interest in this new 17 now. Bullberry's site states they will be chambering contender barrels in it when ammo becomes available. I currently have 2 rimfire contender rifle barrels. A 17 HM2, which is my favorite squirrel caliber. It works better for squirrels IMO than the 22 long rifle, and almost as well as a 32 long. I would still like the 25 rimfire reintroduced though.

My other barrel is the previously mentioned 5mm Remington. The new centurion ammo works quite well in my barrel, and I enjoy it very much. Seems to be a nice middle ground between the 17 and 22 centerfires. But the thing I like most about it is the 5mm Craig. It is a centerfire version of the 5mm, and can be fired from an unaltered chamber. I will be setting up to reload it sometime in the future, and if I can find someone to cut a mold for me, I will cast for it.

If this new 17 Winchester has the possibility of someone converting some kind of brass to work in it so it can be used as a centerfire, I'll be all in. The 17 hornet may be more practical, but the possibility of using either rimfire or centerfire ammo interests me and is why I keep the 5mm barrel. Years ago when they were first introduced I really wanted a 17 and 22 CCM. Those little cases just catch my interest. But add the ability to use both kinds of ammo just makes it more interesting. A centerfire type conversion may or may not be forthcoming, but I bet some enterprising individual makes it work. I know I will be watching and waiting.

I bought into the wssm when they first came out. Marketed wrong and released at the wrong time. My only complaint is the brass thickness. It also insists on bbl cleanliness and if you clean every 5 to 10 it WILL shoot. My .223 wssm is super accurate. The average joe cleans their gun once a year and has no idea how many rounds between cleanings. I help at the local gun shop and have cleaned more than one copper mine out of these barrels. Brass is not terrible to find but will be in 10 yrs. What then? Being there is no "parent" case and the action is so short, I will have a boat paddle. That will be a shame.
My favorite rf is 17hm2. Same thing marketing here. The ammo pre scare was already hard to find. I like the idea of this new 17 and feel it is going to be an incredible little round. I'm gonna wait and see before I jump in. I hope it can go many rounds between cleanings or it will suffer the fate of the wssm line. Not for people like us but Joe.
I am REALLY interested in the case as it would swage a fantastic 6.5 and maybe a .308. I truly hope they market it correctly and it sticks around. I hope everyone in my county likes it so I can get the brass.

Given what a year or two before Winchester and Savage worked on this project/devolpe then to only release it to the public during a critical time. Very bad timing no matter how good a cartridge is. I would just prefer Winchester to make more .22LR right now.

From the investment standpoint, if a person could buy 20-30,000 rounds and set on them he could make money, whether it succeed or not.

That is a cool idea, but wouldn't it dictate the need for two different bolts?

I was referring to a Contender barrel, which could be used with either. A bolt gun would need two different bolts.

My brother bought a Savage rifle in this caliber yesterday. He wanted a 22 mag. but no ammo has been available for a couple years. Walmart had the rifle and a good supply of ammo at $14 per 50. The rifle is a stainless bull barrel. The bull barrel was $1 cheaper than the tapered barrel. I will report back on how it shoots.

I've had mine for over a year. Locally I can find American Eagle and Winchester ammo. It shoots like a house a fire. It is accurate and reaches out to the 150-200 yard range with effectiveness. Love it.

Well this is a resurrection of a four year old thread but this time it is definitely worthy of resurrection! When this started there was quite a bit of fear this round would die quickly and leave owners with an orphan rifle with no ammo just like with the ill-fated 5MM rf round. Thankfully those of us who were so quick to voice doubts seem to have been very wrong indeed as ammo is not only easy to get but is turning out to be even cheaper than expected! I fact I have almost come to despise these rounds (Just joking of course) because I am constantly on the lookout for 22 mag and all I see EVERYWHERE I look are those stikin 17s!!!

Joking aside, this is all good and I am very happy to see this round has succeeded, so far at least, and now about 4 years after being highly skeptical of this interesting new round I am actually toying with the idea of snagging one.

I'm behind on this cartridge, wasn't this the one they tested in a magazine and accuracy was poor?? Any cartridge that would be good on gophers gets me interested.
