Ooooh! Love that Octagon barreled rifle. Good shooting- I'd have to have a tang peep in order to shoot that well with any rifle. Can't see the barrel mounted one's well at all. Too bad you can't use it on the Vashon Blacktails-- Mom and Dad can't keep them away from the roses!

^^^ THAT ^^^ is one handsome rifle you got there

I'm pleased as punch to see it was the Lyman 311291, as I just bought a vintage Lyman Ideal 311291, and I have some 748, now I just need a rifle like yours

yea,,,I like that old Octagon barrel too....nice solid piece of steel
At one time I was thinking of putting on a Tang Sight, but after consulting with a couple of experts who advised me that doing so would lessen the value of the rifle, I decided to make do with the original sights....a real challange for my eyes !
what is really nice about this rifle is the beautiful fit-up of the wood stock and forearm to the metal....tight and clean.

BEAUTIFUL example! And it shoots as good as it looks. I've used similar loads in my 30-30s, 25.0-30.0 grains of WW-748 under Lyman #311291.

California is to the United States what Syria is to Russia and North Korea is to China/South Korea/Japan--a Hermit Kingdom detached from the real world and led by delusional maniacs, an economic and social basket case sustained by "foreign" aid so as to not lose military bases.

yes,,,it is a very sweet old rifle,,,,my Dad bought it after the second world war....$25.00 dollars for the rifle and 6 boxes of 30-30...I remember Dad telling me that $25.00 was alot of money back then. I still have those boxes of cartridges....
Dad used to let me take the rifle out deer hunting when I first started to hunt....lots of memories....this rifle stays in the family
    thanks

atr, why did the "experts" suggest the value would be harmed? The tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. I have tang sights on both of my old long barrelled 1894 rifles.

Very nice.. My dad bought a 94, in 1950.. Manufactured that year also.. Unfortunately, it was involved in an accident which it had to have the stock replaced.. so it no longer matches the forearm.. I plan to replace both, so they will be matching again.. Great shooter.. I too, have good memories using that rifle for hunting...

atr, I'll be darned, I wonder when they stopped doing that? I have 4 1894's, one made in 1911 and the rest in the 20's. All have a single small hole tapped in the tang behind the hammer with a filler plug screw in it. The bolt that goes through the tang to hold the stock is the rear bolt for the Lyman and Marble's tang sights.
