Anyone like IMR SR-4756?

Hey guys. Does anyone like IMR SR-4756? Its a slow seller around here and is always in stock. It looks like it would work well in .38 Special and 9X19. Any favorite loads with it?

I use it as a reduced load in my 30-30 lever rifle with 150 gr cast... 10 gr.
shoots around 1400 fps and good accuracy.
My wife does not like standard loads and wanted milder recoil when she shoots the 30-30

Shooting dreaded almost "j" words . But the core is cast plated , 124 gr from my 38 super open gun I beleive that I am throwing 8.4 gr of 4756 ( a case right full ) It does bark but it also makes major power factor.

I've shot some 4756 in .38s and .45 Colt. It works. Not stellar at anything. Not good at the low end, but for mid to near top end in .38 spl and .45 Colt it works fine. Its not as economical as Bullseye. It meters well and is only slightly position sensitive. Good powder, not popular. I perfer Herco b/c its a little bulkier.

It has worked well for me in the 45ACP, but it really shines for me in the 9MM; 4.8 grains fills the case so there is no telescoping of the bullet, pressure is lower so it doesn't not pound the 9's that I have especially the WWII Luger. Meters well and gives me good accuracy at 25 yards. LLS

That sounds good, I'm planning to use it mostly in the .38, 9mm, and maybe .32 H&R Magnum. What boolit and OAL are you loading in the 9mm?

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to pick some up today and give it a whirl. I have read that 4756 meters great and is a bit faster burning than my pet Accurate #5. That sounds like just what I need for .32 Magnum and snubnose .38 Special.

I use a lot of it in 357 mag and have for years. It works well with 20 gauge reloads as well.

OK, THAT got my attention.......right fine work!

I haven't used SR-4756 in any cast rifle applications (yet......), but it has been a longtime favorite of mine in 32-20 WCF revolver loads, as directed by Ken Waters in his "Pet Loads" columns and book. It has become THE FUEL for that caliber in my rollerpistols.

I've used it in 38 Special, mid-power 357 and 44 Magnum loads (Keith SWC boolits @ 1050-1100 FPS), & 9mm and 45 ACP loads toward the upper end of their performance scales. It works as least as well as the Alliant shotshell fuels do in those roles.

I have a friend that swears by 4756 for loading 38 short colt for his 627 to make minor pf for ICORE competition.. I've also used it with success with 130-135gr RN in the 38 super.. It also works well for high velocity lead and steel shot loads in the 12 gauge.

A local shooter here, was maybe 4-years ago, sold off all of his other powders and uses only 4756. And he shoots a lot of different guns, cast only of course.

I did try it in an older 1903 at his insistence and it did OK but not my best combination. But in my S&W Model 58 .41 mag (4" bbl, fixed sights) with a 220-grain H&G bullet, 9.0 gr. does really well. Looking forward to trying it in my S&W Model 52, .30 spl. when we get some warm weather. Will also try it in my 1911 .45 ACP.

To me, 4756 is much like Unique, but much cleaner burning. The only downside is that you only get 8 oz in a one-lb can. On the other hand, being less dense, it bulks up in the cartridge case better than Unique.

SR4756 burn rate wise is slower than Unique.. it is more in line with Herco/Blue Dot/HS6

Hey, neighbor--thanks for the heads-up concerning 44-40 WCF. I have 200 new Starline cases for my war toys so chambered, and I'll test-drive SR-4756 in some of them.

Thanks Jake for the heads up, I never thought about using 4756 in anything but mouse fart loads. In case my pic does not come through the 5 shots with a 3/4 inch group, 16 grains, is a real nice load. I'm going to try to post a pic of this and if I fail I will try again.

YA buddy!!! that's some good shooten, that 4756 works good in severial of my 30 cal milbolt guns.
Now I need to try it in some pistol calibers.

Years ago, around 1972, the Speer manual #8 listed some very hot loads for 4756 and the 38spl. At that time, it created a stir for 4756 as a miracle powder, producing very high velocities with safe pressures. Being a newbe at the time I of course had to try these loads out which I did in a Colt Detective Special no less, not even a medium framed gun. I encountered no problems with these loads, nor any indications of high pressure that I could discern, but I was hardly an expert. In subsequent editions of the Speer manual these loads were reduced substantially. Either the lawyers got involved or the earlier loads were in fact too hot, I don't know. I have continued to use 4756 in many calibers successfully, though in the interest of prudence I don't subject my Colt DS or any other 38 to those earlier loads.

I use it and love it in 9mm 38spcl 45acp and heavy 12ga 1 1/4 field loads.
