    Pier fishing

    Hello Folks,

My wife and I plan to take a sportsman’s holiday in early March. We’re going to stay in a hotel near the Nags Head, NC fishing pier. It has been many years since I’ve done this type of fishing.

What is the ideal rig for fishing the long, ocean-front piers on the North Carolina Outer Banks? I’m guessing a short, stiff rod with a strong spinning reel and 30 pound test line would be good. On the other hand, if casting is not so important, then any of my medium boat rods should do fine. What do you guys think?

    Take care, Tom

    Tom,
Long spinning rigs dominate. I carry a 7' spinning rod with 12-17# line, and a 6' boat rod with a level-wind Penn and 20#.
Some guys at the end of the pier try to cast to the Gulf stream, but I like mid-pier. I lower a bottom bait, or spot rig, and cast about with the spinning rod.
Some guys can manage more rods, but for me, fishing is about relaxing.
In high season there is a mate to help with the pier gaff or net, but I don't know if he is there early season.
    Best,

Today I called the fishing pier and learned they are closed until after my holiday. Bummer! However, I may be able to get some time off in mid-May, when they are open. I wonder what's biting in then?

6-7' spinning rig with 30# braid, Leader to fit what is biting. When I did that in Orlando, rays, tarpon, shark, and the small stuff all around, you never know what is there. I'd rather break off the leader than 30 yds mono. You'll really tick of the others fighting a big one with light line.
