It's been about 20 years since I've been there. Did four one-week trips, two out of Ely and two off the Gunflint over about six years. Was very enjoyable. The fires and wind storms kind of screwed things up off and on but I'm sure all has recovered by now.

When I was 14, I took a 10 day canoe trip out of the Charles L. Sommers Wilderness Canoe Base with a group of scouts from the Valley Forge Council. 9 boys 100 miles deep into wilderness. No way back home but the paddle in your hand. Drink your water right off the paddle. Throw a spoon into any weed bank and it came out with a pike on it. What memories! The trip of a lifetime.

    Overdue for another trip.
We got to visit Knife Lake Dorothy on our trip as well. That was 1971 and she looked old then. The naturally carbonated root beer was an experience for a white bread suburban 14 year old.

Then there was always the Chainsaw Sisters Saloon at the entry point for Mudro Lake...
