Randle makes a good salt water knife. They also have a website to view this on.

Bosuns knife like mentioned before or Russel Knifes of Pictou NS make a sail knife in SS with a serrated edge option. The sheath carries a seperate marlin spike/shakle tool. They last forever.

The Davis rigging knife is cheap, takes a good edge, and has a marlinspike. I have one attached to each life jacket (dinghy racing) and one in the ditty bag. On the keelboat I keep boltcutters and an axe for clearing away rigging.

When I was in the navy we carry what ever knife we want, mainly jack knifes. Some had some like the one with the spike mainly the bosemates but the rest of us ,me includen just a 1 or 2 blade folding knife, some also had a divers knife or hunting knife.I do not know if they still able to carry any knife now on board ship it been so many years since I was in.But I still have a jack knife like the one I use to carry on board.

The reason I ask is this: I race, and after all this time of simply carrying my carry aboard, with this year's changes in regulations, I've decided to break down and get a dedicated sailing knife.

I'm interested in what those who know more about knives than I do think about what the perfect sailing (inshore, racing) knife is.
    Well here we go.

When I was in my 20s I worked as a Deckhand on Freighters going around the Globe, everybody carried a sheet knife with a 4 or 5 inch blade. Of course in those days Ropes where still used a lot.
Nowadays when on my 49 foot Ketch I carry a multi tool which has a serrated knife Blade but when sailing alone I switch over to a Sheet knife.
    Cheers !
