Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. -- H.L. Mencken

The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naïve and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair.― H.L. Mencken

My first powder buy was IMR 4320 for my new Rem 722 in .300 Sav. I was stationed at Loring AFB in Limestone, Me. in 1963, and the Rod and Gun club on the base didn't have any IMR 4064, which is what the old Speer #6 manual said would be a good powder for the .300 Sav and 150 to 165g boolits. I was so disappointed, but I loaded a bunch up and I found a load that worked well, but at the first chance to get some IMR 4064 years later, I jumped at it. Oddly enuf, I haven't bought any 4320 since emptying that old steel can back in 1963-4. I still have the old Herter's M-3 press and the Herter's .300 Sav dies, but the gun and the old #6 Speer manual are being fondled by a good buddy who "needed" a good, accurate and cheap bolt action rifle.

1972, one pound of Unique, a .357 Lee loader, one pack of primers and 100 Sierra 158gr HP. Bought them the same day I bought my Model 19 S&W, hog heaven.
    Still have the Model 19.

I was 13 years old and loading shotgun right next to my dad. He would put me and my brother to work during the winter months in Michigan packing hulls for them elusive grouse and trap shooting. Boy I wish I had more money to buy components at those prices. I still have that first can of unique and look at it when ever I am at the loading bench.

I was 17 and had just bought a RC press to feed my twin brother and i's twin Super Blackhawks, all i knew was what you guys had preached so i bought Unique and 2400, still have half that 2400 bottle cuz we soon found out that even Unique will drill a SWC through anything we could find slow enough to hit! At the time it seemed like a safe bet to learn with since there is such a big window between min and max, plus its fluffy enough to make a double charge hard. Now that we've been through who knows how many pounds in almost every one of our guns, it still doesn't seem like a bad plan! Good ol' "Flaming Dirt".

I was given a RCBS RockChucker and a set of dies for my .45acp. My first power purchase was a pound of Bullseye and 200 primers. The powder lasted a lot longer than the primers did.

I don't know if it was a simpler time, but certainly a time of decency, and responsibility, first powder bullseye 9mm and 357.

15lb keg of 4831 surplus, got it for 20 bucks off a guy and he threw in an old c&h c press and a lyman scale. figured at that price it was time to buy some more loading gear.

Too long ago and too many cans over the bridge. I started loading for a 38/357, so the powder must have been Bluedot or Unique. IIRC

    BLC (2) for a .223.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

IMR4227 back in 1995. Followed on by IMR4064 and a host of others.

I guess I am the only one thinking my first powder had to be for my bottom when I was sporting diapers. My first gun powder was bulls eye to reload a 357 with the lee you use with a hammer. I never did get over jumping when a primer went off while I was banging it in.
Reloading to save money I am sure the saving is going to start soon
