What was your first powder buy?

I had an aunt give me some $$$ for Christmas and had my Dad take me to Harveys Pawn. Bought a Lee loader in 30/06, a box of primers (100 seemed like a lot then),a box of 150 grn Sierra bullets and a # of IMR4064. This all occured in
1960-61. I still have the empty can. Plus the first can of 2400,Unique and Green Dot. I get warm fuzzys just holding the first ones.......Who would have thought I'd still be doing the same things 50+ years later.

BTW,An M-1 carbine and a press with dies came next year. Casting boolits to feed the hungry beast came that same year.......I got checked by the sheriff soon after as I had found a "flash hider" and a couple 30 round mags. It looked "evil" to someone as I rode my bicycle the 2-3 miles thru town to go shoot.........try that today!

4064 to feed the .243 I had then. Loaded them with a Lee Loader which cost something like $12 mail order, in 1968.

AL5 and a Lee loader for 12 gauge. Still have part of a can on the shelf, one of those square cardboard cans.

My first was 3031 to feed a .270 with 110 grain bullets. My second and third powders where Red Dot and 700x to fill 12 gauge shotshells. Herco followed soon after. I then used the latter three powders to feed my father's .45 ACP...Ray

-sigh- I remember carrying my rifle across the handlebars as I rode through town to go shooting down behind the Westinghouse plant. No one raised an eyebrow. It was what boys did. Simpler times...

9#s of W231 and 9#s of W748. I was reloading with my grandfather since I was a child but didn't get my own setup until recently. Otherwise I wouldn't have ordered 18#s right away. I miss not having to buy components and powder

20 lbs H380 in cardboard keg, 50 pounds H5010 in paper bags, shipped via REA, for a grand total of 50 bucks delivered. Arrived as a loner box on a boxcar was very surprising. They must have thought that stuff was nitroglycerin. ... felix

    Howdy !

    IMR3030... for use in my .35Rem M-336.

For me, its still the go-to powder for 200gr bullets ("J"-word ) in .35 Rem.

    With regards,

Had to have been Bullseye, to load 38 Spl with cast boolits. Early 70s, learned to cast and load all at one time.

Same as Bolton, it was IMR4350 in the one pound metal can to feed my old '95 Mauser Chileno in 7X57. Still got the rifle and I still have a metal can or two left. For pistol it was IMR4227 to feed my .45 Colt BH and it is STILL one of my top three in that caliber.

700X and H110 to feed my Taurus 357 in 1995. 700X for the 158gr cast SWC I used to get at the local gun shop and the H110 for the 125gr XTPs. Used to treat myself to a cylinder of the full power 357s every now and then. Tight budget for a 15 year old so the cast is what I shot the most of. Funny how I have come full circle to shooting basically cast only again out of choice.

In 1980, my first purchase of powder was a pound of 2400 along with a 44 mag Lee Loader, brass, primers, store bought cast swc boolits and a TC Contender 44. That's when the madness..I mean education began and continues...
