Do you know whats in there?

Hello, everyone. Now I enjoy mixing up experimental batches of bullet lube as much as some of you guys..but there could be a possible danger of bore corrosion..Santa brought me Paul Mathews latest book on Black Powder Bullet Lubes. He states that long ago, he used water-pump grease on breech-block of original Sharps carbine..hot saopy water clean-up & carefully oiled..later found rust in bore. Used same water-pump grease in smokeless lube..cleaned with Hoppe's & oiled..caught rust just in time..some unknown ingredient in grease reacted with heat/pressure in bore?
I see alot of posted lubes containing commercial oils or grease of unknown make-up. Just a heads up.

some greases like older soda (sodium)or lime (calacium) grease will have some water in them as well as clay greases most other soaps are pretty dry

I continue to have anxiety over the hygroscopic properties of Sodium Stearate in boolit lube, but through repeated, long-term testing and not cleaning bores for long periods between shooting, and copper-strip testing, I simply cannot prove that it is a concern in a wax-based lube. Stearic ACID, however, will rot barrels, gas checks, brass, and tools.

So yes, fair warning to all lube cooks: Use your head, some things change properties when exposed to heat, friction, pressure, and smokeless powder residue.

i'm gonna go with water pump grease being a bentonite [bentone] based grease.
good for friction modification and a good barrier grease too.
but it's open air water property's not soo good.
