I would like to know if anyone has seen where I can get a mold that will cast 180 gn .277 -.280?

Heaviest I'm aware of currently is around 150gr. I have an old Ideal 134gr rn I shoot in my 6.8 SPC.

Are we certain a standard twist barrel will stabilize a boolet that heavy? My vote is for the 150.

they are 1-10 a 180 gr boolit would be what over 2" long.
you'd have to speed it up a bit.

I shoot 280642 (150 grains) and the 287346 (135 grain)…

The 287346 is a 7mm boolit that sizes down to 0.278” with no problems…

I am uncertain that the 270 Winchester is the best candidate for cast boolits and hunting deer-sized game…

The only reason I started shooting cast in a 270 Winchester is the fact that I won a Model 700 some years ago. I have several 270’s in Model 70 and they have only shot jacketed bullets…

I thought I would just try the 700 and keep it purely cast…

I found that over 1850± fps, the accuracy went downhill quickly—don’t know why…

Still it would have been deer-sized game accurate to 150 yards with no problems…

BUT, in my opinion, both boolits would just punch a 0.278” hole straight through the deer…

Again, just my opinion, I am not a fan of this method of killing deer. I think the wound channel for those boolits would be small and death would be a long process…

Better calibers than the 270 Winchester for cast as far as I am concerned—boolit selection is minimal, and checks can be a bit difficult to find also…

Can polls only have two options? This seems like a very odd poll, since 180gr in the .270 is very rare nowadays. I've only seen cast 165gr done by handloaders sizing down boolits meant for other calibers. Jacketed 160gr and 180gr were made, and you can likely find some if you look long enough, but most hunters found that much heavier than 150gr wasn't really worth it. From my research, this is likely due to the rifling really needing to be more in the 1:8 range to properly stabilize a 180gr bullet, and most .270 barrels are 1:10.
For large game, I would think the standard option for this forum would be:
130gr jacketed softnosed
130gr ballistic tip
130gr lead cast (gas checked)
150gr jacketed roundnosed
150gr lead cast (gas checked)

The mold I have is a RCBS 270-130-FN
I do not have any cast right now, that have not been molested for my
paper patch trials. Therefor, I can't tell you what they drop at & I cant remember.
Its gonna be warmer here the next day or so, I can pour some if you wanna try them.
I'll be outta town after Wed AM so I'd have to do it Mon or Tuesday.
I do not have gas checks for .270 cal as I wouldnt be using them for PP.
Lemme know soon, unless you can wait a couple a weeks.

EDIT: I found a post I made in the PP forum, they drop at .278" on the bands with COWW metal + .3%tin

I guess it is possible to have a mold made, that bullet would be approx 1.2" long depending on ogive and nose design. It would have to reach 2k to stabilize in the 1:10 twist.

I have a lyman 280642 that yields 150 gr with ww and a lyman 280468 that gives 122gr. A 180 gr boolit would sure play with the heads of the crowd that are hesitant of seating boolits deeper than the case neck!

PerMy 27-130 FN drops 50/50 WW/1-20 at .278 131 grns . I paper patch it for 7mm . I looked for some time 150 gr let alone 175 moulds in 7mm, I don't think are production moulds these days.

I thought a 180 was kind of heavy for a 270. Not for a 3006 though

150 is plenty. 130 is probably plenty too, I know it is in the 7mm-08. The trick is get enough velocity and use a tough, yet malleable alloy such as a heat-treated, low-antimony alloy.

RCBS 150 gr. must be seated too deep in order to avoid getting stuck in the rifling in my Ruger #1. Smaller would be better for me.

First is a 280412 which is sized .280, gas checked(AL) and weighs out at 138 with lube and check.
Second is a 280473 again sized at .280, GCAL and weighs 124 with L & C.

I have checks on hand and can cast some for you if you would like to try them.

Most of my casting is for handgun calibers so I am very limited with rifle experience. That being said I would probably go 150gr under the assumption that your not going to be able to push a boolit more than 2700 with out leading and still keep boolit not too brittle. For the diameter 180gr sounds like it would be handicapped with length problems for magazine and chambering.

I am interested in this thread because so many here have first hand experience with them. I have taken a lot of deer with my .270 but all with jacketed 130gr of different makes but all with H4831 and all performed excellent. Now that I have been here awhile I realise that jacketed bullets are a passing fad(sorry to who ever coined that phrase) and I'm interested in hunting with cast. FB

I shoot the Lyman 280642. I took a really nice whitetail doe at 50 yards with it this year. She was my first kill with cast. She ran 15 yards after a slightly quartering away shot but I don't know how she ran that far. She had both lungs popped, and busted heart, and a shattered shoulder. Yes, a bigger hole will cause more damage, but proper shot placement is the most important factor.
