ideal lyman 311 278 top punch for lyman 450 ?

Anyone know where I can get a top punch for the ideal/lyman 311278 boolit?

Or should I just use a lee push through die for it?

I want to see how this new to me cast boolit runs in my 308 700 pss and ar 300 BO, but I don't have a top punch and I don't want to flatten it out on the downward stroke. Or flatten it in a bush through with the boolit above it.

    Any ideas ???
    Thanks

Use one for the 311284 or just another that is a close fit.if it leaves little mark on the nose it wont matter. The one i had had a nose of about.297 and a body of .314.it dindt so well much above 1200.I am curious how yours is dimensioned.

I wouldn't be as concerned about the top punch or a small " flat " on the nose caused by a less than ideal fit of a top punch on the nose as I would be all the bullet that will have to be below the case neck to get this one to chamber properly in a .308 Win.

The Perfessor will make you a top punch that will fit your bullet perfectly. PM him with your request.

Like George said, a small " flat " on the nose won't have any affect at all on the flight of the bullet.

Looks like this one might be better suited to the Krag or the 06' with cases that offer a longer neck ?

    Yup that's the one.

    Mold is stamped 308 278 141

But couldn't find it in the castpics site so I searched here and the general thought was it's 311278
Near as I can tell it mic's 312 inside. I haven't cast any yet though.

It's also going to be run slow subsonic slow. for both guns.
Have a 300 BO suppressor and and 308 can about 5 or 6 months out. So as long as it seats and it stablizes it should be good.

    The 300 is a 1/8 twist 16 inch carbine.
I have yet to count the twist on the 700 pss. or slug either barrel.

Also according to the table it should stablize in the 300 no problem.

Will def. find out if it's key holing before the can goes on though.

the bearing on hte body is long enough that even with the undersized nose it shot OK for me in a 303 and a Krag.it wont fit teh throat of most 308's very well unless you taper the front band a bit.It was about a 2 MOA bullet for me.

    Theperfessor: PM sent.

I could use a top punch for a 170 grn B&M mold too.
along with a couple other top punches.

No big deal if it doesn't work out on the 700

Advice taken.... and being I bought the 700 in 03 it is more than likely a 1/12 twist so after 170 175 grn probably won't stabilize anyway.

the 311278 will stabilize @ 1200 in a 1-12.its pretty blunt for its weight.

Cool If nothing else though I hope it feeds the 300 the 700 would just be a + .

I talked to NOE briefly via e-mail and he said his 300 molds were great for bolt guns but mine is a semi and he was very fair and honest when he told me I would experience feed problems.

So when I'm ready for a new mold he will get my money.

And I will be ready soon.

I cast up about 300 of them today.

And yes they do seem to be to long for the 308 700 pss.
and probably the 300 blkout too.

I will say this they are really nice, almost to nice to load and shoot.

Maybe I can get them to run in a M1 grand

Oh and they are .312 on the money out of the 10 or so I threw on the dial calipers. With straight water chilled WW alloy.

Also gonna get some funds out to the perffesor this week some time for some top punches.
