    Masking tape

I don't paper patch, but this weekend I ran into an old dude at a gunshow that seemed quite knowligible. He said he cast 400 grain 45/70 boolits, ran them through his 0.451 sizing die, cieaned them up, wrapped them with exactly (no overlaps) one wrap of masking tape and shot them. He said they were accurate and flattened deer. Sounds plausible to me, but l have never pped a boolit. What do you guys think? (I know pping boolits has nothing to do with kidney stones but go there if you must.)

I suspect, you might try several other sources.
    Easiest is paper.
How did he get them to eject on firing?

He said it worked fine. He indicated he did a lot of paper patching. Of course old farts never lie.

Of course we old farts don`t lie! We just arch our eyebrows and roll our eyeballs a lot! Having patched a boolet or three I just might suspect his accuracy claims. The boolet core needs to be shed of the patch after exiting the muzzle. Any hang- ons of the patch will cause an imbalance to the boolets intended point of aim with an unbalanced rotation causing a yaw. I might try this just to disprove it to myself.Robert

While the tape is fresh, it slips going into the case, and into the bore.
When it is well dry, a week or so, it gets hard.
I tried that stuff back in the 70s. Got to learn how to clean a bore.
The other issue is getting the tape tight on the casting. I never could, at least not as tight as I can get paper to be.
    It was fun though.

    I suspect EVERYONE's accuracy claims--especially mine.

If the patch doesn't come off at the muzzle you will have NO accuracy. I suspect the old fellow was pulling your chain some. One wrap of tape on a .451 bullet will not bring it up to the .459/.460 needed to seal the bore.
45 AUTO! Because having to shoot someone twice is just silly!

what about the hypo-allergenic paper tape in the first aid kit?

    same thing?

It's not the paper, it's the glue, right?

while i have not tryed it yet i do have a theory...[i know huh....wowww!!!]...my thinking is such...

IF...yep IF...the tape were to stick properly to the boolit and stick very well...then if it stays on the boolit upon being spit outta the barrel...then it would not cause an unballance condition to exist and then...if the boolit just has a extra skin adhered to it ...then the boolit SHOULD...yep...SHOULD be just as accurate as a bare boolit that shucks ALL the regular patching paper as it gets spit outta the barrel.

now having never thus far tryed such a thing i do believe that IF a feller COULD get that tape to stay on the boolit clear to the target...then in THEORY it should be fairly accurate to shoot and hunt with.

THERE...thats my un-invited THEORY!!! now all i gotta do is read about others experience with this tape stuff and eventually try it myself so i too can spend hours with my turpentine bottle and tight cleaning patch's to try to rid my barrel of the lead that will prolly wind up clinging to the inside of my barrel.
