Dillon custom powder funnel for 9mm

I just received my "new toy". It is Dillon XL 650.

At once I realized that I can not use it until I have better powder funnel.
Think is that I use .357 caliber cast boolits.

Problem is that original powder funnel isn't big enough, so boolits are shaved or swaged down.

If any one is also interested in bigger powder funnel (.356,3565 or.357or...) let me know here.

I'm open to suggestions on measures and different designs.

This is just interest thread for now!!!!!

There was a business in the UK that did custom expanders... NDFS (North Devon Firearms Services) sadly no more... but I have a .38 cal expander for HBWC... superb... just wish I could get more... missed the bus on that one tho..

Dillon reponded some years ago to a custom expander with " our expanders will work with cast bullets... " not ideally though....

The "make it & it'll sell" days are gone....

... make what will sell... the world has changed...
    May we achieve our aims....

Buckshot make me one of these. It mics .355 and expands a bit deeper than the Dillon powder through expander. It works very well. I would be interested in a larger one. And ones for additional calibers.

45 2.1, what do you mean by,........ with a expansion length for the 9mm HP.

MiHec recently did the 9mm HP mold again. A approximately 125 to 130 gr. HP. Make the parallel sided body part of the expander long enough for it.

    Can I suggest?

I have a big headache with my Hornady PTX, if you can make a custom one, I will be first in the list.

    Calibers needed: 356, 357, 401, 451

I would absolutely buy one, like Mr. 45 2.1, sized for the Mihec 9mm HP mold.
Would .3565" be the best size for seating a .358 bullet?

My 9mm boolits are .357. I would absolutely by one of these that expands to .3565. I load the RCBS-124-RN gas check boolit.

I believe this also fits the 550B correct?

If so, yes I'd be interested

Interesting, I load 9mm with .357 sized boolits and don't have any problems shaving, you just have to bell enough. I haven't pulled a boolit and miced it though. How much neck tension does it take to deform a boolit? I guess that would depend on what alloy you use. I'm water dropping wheel weights with a bit of tin added.

I'll take home my OD mic and pull one tonight.

    It slightly deforms my boolits.

The sizing die in the Star sizes .3565" and a pulled boolit at the base miced .3560". The Saeco 929 is long @ .713". Eyeballing the base to the crimp witness mark on a pulled boolit with the ears of calipers is ~.280".

I miced the 9mm & 38/.357 powder funnels and eyeballed the bearing surface length with the ears of my calipers, also expanded a few cases and measured the ID with calipers:

9mm: .3525"-.3528" dia .353" brass ID ~.150" bearing surface length

38/.357: .3548"-.3549" dia .355" brass ID ~.270" bearing surface length

When I cast some more I'll try the 38/.357 powder funnel, at first glance it looks made for my boolit. But I don't know with spring back what kind of neck tension it will produce.

Anybody have an opinion of how much neck tension is appropriate with cast boolits?

Side note the 38/.357 funnel if from around 1993, the the 9mm is ~ 2-3 years old. And the 38/.357 has better form on the OD.

Yes the 650 and 550 powder funnels are the same.

    .

That isn't enough to worry about.

I need one for 38 S&W which uses .360 bullets. So an expander size of .359? should work. Dillon said to just use the 9mm expander, but it is used with .356 bullets,so I just don't see that working well. dnmcoy, apparently the 38 special expander is too short.
