    28 gauge trap loads

A little off topic here but curious if anyone is shooting trap with a 28 gauge?

I'm hoping to find someone that has done a little pattern testing with some 3/4 or 7/8 oz. loads.

I've currently burned up a case of Remington STS shells to do some load development with, noticed the factory stuff had a few holes in the pattern, and hope someone here has got a load that shoots fairly tight out of an IM or full choke.

I am doing research on basic loads from the powder companies but a little real world experience can save a lot of time.

You can PM the info to me if you'd like but I was hoping I wasn't the only one who would benift from the thread.

For that reason please post loads, safe and published if you please, in this thread for all to benfit from.

I did a little of patterning with my Citori this past summer, more for skeet, but did shoot a few rounds of small bore trap with a Full choke. I run 3/4oz load of #8's with 14.3gr Universal (have to see what # the Mec bushing is), Winchester primer, and a Fed 28S1 wad in a Winchester HS hull. I did try 20/28 and Longshot along with the Winchester AA wad also, but the Federal wads made the most difference in patterns with all the chokes in this gun.

Well, no 1 a 28ga for trap is a hit and miss [pun intended} your best bet is a duplex load of 7 1/2 and 8 or 9 . That way you have a load as dense as possible. The 20/28 powder is good. Need to watch powder as bulk will cut your amount of shot

Won't the duplex shot load tend to stretch out the shot string? Seems like the heavier shot would hold velocity a little bit better and end up outrunning the 9s. It would look good on a pattern board but lengthening the string would make all parts of the string less dense anywhere the bird intersected it.

Not debating, just thinking with my fingers (hard to think "out loud" via keyboard.

Good stuff guys, hope to see more!

Universal load looks promising good tip on the Federal wad.

I've been loading 3/4 oz of homemade shot above 16 grains of Longshot in STS and AA (original--not HS) hulls. If I do my share--aiming at the clay pigeon, it does a respectable job of breaking them. This is 1300fps by the book--haven't chrono'd them.

At my club very few shoot the 28 at trap, however, many shoot it on the skeet range. Reloading the only way to go if your going to shoot a lot of 28 as the factory shells are too espensive.

well I did my research with the old Handloader articles, a couple old Lyman shotgun manuals and an Alliant manual.

Turns out I had most of the "makin's" for a 28 gauge load I'd like try:

    STS case
    Federal 28sa1 wad
    Rem. 209P primer
    18 grains Bluedot

Thia load also fits in the Federal 28 gauge plastic Target shell and I had 25 of those on hand to reload as well.

The federal made a much nicer looking shell, the STS would ocassionally get a "booger" on the crimp but not often enough for me to figure out what the issue was.

This load got the nod as a "starter" because of low pressures, under 9900 psi which I've found eases the shot out of the barrel with less deformation thus increasing pattern density.

I learned this in my 12 gauge 7/8's OZ. target load, which only make 6500 PSI and patterns in the 70% range plus!

Plan to get out and try these at Thanksgiving, Family gets together at the Mom's in Carson City, NV. so I'll see how they work then.

    Weather permitting of course!

Thanksgiving weather in Nevada was excellent! 60 degrees in and around Minden with no wind!

Great for shooting a little Skeet /Trap with family and friends.

The Bluedot 28 gauge load was phenominal! 9 shot real fun and I powdered every bird the do all put up and powdered them good!

I now plan to take this out to the real trap range and try my hand thier!
