Elmer Keith's formula for meplat diameter had to do with lower speed pistol bullets, not higher speed rifle bullets. Applying it to rifles as a criterion for bullet selection is misleading and unnecessary. Rifle bullets don't work the same way, as has been pointed out several times already.

For something big...like a moose, what bullet hardness would be required for good penetration on say a shoulder hit? Would the Meplat diameter come in to play with a harder bullet?

For big animals like moose meplate diameter is good if it has weight to maintane momentum.
For my rifle designs I use 65% meplate and go about as heavy as twist rate will allow.
This gives more than adiquate meplate for good permanent wound, retained terminal velocity, and good long range stability.

Thanks. My gun is a 35 Whelen Ackley and I was planning on something 260+ with a meplat of 70%.

    Sorry for the thread drift.
