Quick Load help for my .358 Win Cast Cartridge?

Could Someone help me out on the speed of my .358 Winchester Load?

33.5Gr IMR-3031

BRP-360-220 Gr FP/GC

1-14 Twist 20" Barrel.

I would like to know since I plan to Hunt with it and the load seems Viable.

3 Groups of 5 Shots at 50 yards.

Sorry no quick load software - does no one in San Antonio, TX a chronograph?

Nobody that I know of. I am a Lone Injun with my loading. And the Ranges are a Real Pita when it comes to Chronographs.

But I may just have to break down and purchase one somehow.

I'd give a WAG of around 1700 -- but I could be off by a substantial margin.

Buy a chrony.
It's cheaper than Quickload and all a SWAG till you put lead on paper anyway.
Also if you can test a load at three known distances, you can refer to ballistics charts in the back of some reloading manuals. That can give you a close approximation of velocity.

I don't have that boolit in the database. However, if I plug in the RCBS 250 grainer I come up with 1686 fps @ about 16,000 psi. To get a more accurate estimate I would need the dimensions of the boolit, the case capacity of a sized case in grains of water filled to overflow, and the COAL.

In any event, it would appear that your under 2,000 fps and operating at fairly low pressure.

Using a SAAMI OAL Cartridge Length of 2.73" and an arbitrary bullet length of 1.3", launched from a 20" barrel, you should have an estimated Muzzle Velocity of approximately 1,820 fps and pressure is estimated at 22,168 psi.

Plugging in the correct dimensions makes a difference.

Estimated Muzzle Velocity is 1747 fps and estimated pressure is 16914 psi.

Just for kicks, I scaled out the bullet image in the Precision Bullet design software and then, using the new bullet fit software modules that I'm working on, worked up some images.

Then I entered the numbers into the Precision Ballistics and Sight Settings Calculator to generate some ballistics and trajectory charts.

Now you can view every thing that you would ever want to know about the load.

Oh, if you let us know what kind of sights and the sight radius, I can work up a sight adjustment chart for whatever ranges you need.

By the way, that is a well designed bullet for these cartridge and chamber dimensions.

So let me see if I can get the information correct lol. if I am high by 1.6" at 50 yards then I am dead on at 143 yards? If so that is not as bad as I thought the speed indicated. Should work fine or Deer and Hog out to that range?

If the velocity, ballistic coefficient and sight height are as selected, that is what the calculations indicate. But, as with any empirical data, you need to do test firing at the actual ranges.

Most of the time these calculations are quite close. But occasionally, the Data Demon rears its ugly head and nothing checks out. However it is always good to have a reasonable expectation of what the test results will be.

The muzzle velocity is easily checked with a chronograph. but the ballistics coefficient is a computer estimation and can only be verified by obtaining either group center coordinates or velocity data at different ranges and then use ballistic software to calculate a BC that will produce matching velocities or impact coordinates.

Tom Thank You so much for the information. And since you were so nice to figure the BC and Speed I got to plug it into the Hornady Ballistics system of which was darn close to what you gave. And I agree I will have to give it a go at the range just to make sure. But Tom from your information and the one I will post the drop is not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. As if I pick the right place where I hunt then the range is right around 100-140 yards so it should be in the Sweet Spot for this round?

You can make your columns hold their spacing by first writing them in "Courier New" font. That format will make each text character the same width. You can select that font from the little window at the top left of the reply form.
After you get your columns all entered and spaced correctly, use your mouse to select the complete table then from the second row of buttons at the top of the reply form click the "php" button at the far right of the row of buttons. This will place a php tag at the beginning and end of the selected text and it should then appear in a browser just as you have it formated.

This text was typed in the Courier New font and you can see how each character typed is the same length.

The devil is in the details. I noticed that your sight height and BC input variables were a little different than my original values so I re-entered them and the results are now nearly identical to your table.
