I have no idea what they are made from, but I know this, I replaced my toilet ring in 2000, and the one I took out was very soft and sticky golden yellow (NOT the soiled part) and the new one was the same. I also bought a second one.
a year ago, I went back and looked at some, cause I thought I may need to remove my toilet, and couldn't find the old one, the new ones are HARD, and gray, and smell off.
not at all like the first ones....

I bought a toilet ring several years ago and melted it into a small "tin" can and use it to lubricate wood screws in the shop. Probably doesn't work as well as some of the things sold for that purpose but is much cheaper.

I remember watchin' my Dad drag wood screws across the top of a bar of Ivory Soap. I would imagine that petroletum wax (toilet rings) would work just fine for that.
