    35 PP mold designs

E mailed Tom at Accurate Molds last weekend about 2 PP molds for my 35's this is his response to my input. Got to love the guy! Custom design over the weekend.

    35-265P is for my Whelen

35-225P is for everything but made to fit my leverguns.

Any input on design would be cool. I reduced the number of grooves to increase bearing surface but still give grip for the paper. Most will just be shot on paper but end goal is for hunting.

The design of the Whelen mold is along the same design as are my .416 and .338 PP molds made for me by Richard Doughty.Robert

Well, there is nothing wrong with either design to me. Just a thought, the patch tends to slip back off the boolit so maybe shallower grooves with a sharper forward face and more of them would work OK? Remember that the area in the grooves also bears the boolit in the bore if they are shallow enough. A shallow base rebate may or may not be beneficial and I would consider a base chamfer. The idea is to prevent base edge feathering from rifling impression and dragging. Another thought is an ogive start groove just to give the patch a positive locating point for consistency. More of a 'line' in the surface really. I do not know what's best (I wish I had the time and inclination to test these ideas - I have the means).

Here is a sample with base edge feathering. (This one was about gas cutting).

    And here not.

There may be other reasons for the difference. Those two samples were cast in the same mold but with a different base plug. I don't know if the boolit length (and weight) was the same.

I have been wanting to come up with one for my 358 bolt gun, and you beat me to it! That 265gr. looks like almost what I wanted to do. Let us know how they fly for you. Should be good 'uns.

Made a small change to the 225. Put a .03 rad on the nose to make it feed smoother.

Ordered a mold with both designs.

Andy, wish I had time to play with it more. Working in Clovis 5 or 6 days a week don't leave much time. Gonna move my RV next week then I can cast more. I'll get you some samples to try.

That is a brutal work schedule, but it's a good thing you have work! Too bad the schedule doesn't leave much time for chasing prairie dogs out there.

Thanks for the samples, I'll give 'em a good try in the 358!

    Take care,
    -Andy

Yeah the dogs are sitting right by the road. Could get 3 with a slingshot.

I know this is an old post but curios to hear how these Boolits worked out. I'm just getting started and need all the info I can get.

I would like to see a slight bevel on the base as per 303 guy's suggestion. The bevel would make twisting the tail easier when wet wrapping. Other than that I wish I had a 35 cal. rifle to shoot them in. Brodie
