Falling Block Rifle?

Hey guys, my curiosity is up regarding falling block rifle actions. Can anyone make any suggestions regarding an affordable centerfire falling block rifle? I'm really just looking for a range toy to satisfy my curiosity, not any high end or especially collectible. Thanks guys!

A good used Ruger #1 may be easier to find than the Browning/Winchester Highwall.
Either one would be fine.

Affordable is based on the 'dirt poor' income level. Definitely less than 1k, and less is better.

Falling blocks usually start at just under $1000. That being said I did find a Ruger #1 for $600 on gunbroker but it has TERRIBLE wood on it. Someone bubba'd it bad. But it did allow me to get the rifle I wanted, albeit ugly as sin. I think your best option is probably the Ruger, just cruise the auction sites and usual places. I just happened to recall running across a Ruger #3 in .223 with a heavy octagon barrel at a local gun show that had $550 on it and would have gone home with me if I'd not just spent my firearms budget the previous weekend. Patience will be paramount in your search I believe.

Matini-Henry British .577-450 (only reasonable to shoot much if you reload).

For a play toy, I'd suggest looking for one of the Australian Martini Cadet rifles which has been altered to .32-20 or .38 Spec/.357. They turn up on GunBroker from time to time,

Either one of these often go for well under $1k, with the M-H .450 being the cheaper due to greater availability with the Nepal cache.

I have had 5 FBW rifles, Very fine action and super strong, They are making new actions today again, just seen 2 of them at a shoot, about $450.00?

You wouldn't happen to have a link or some other reference on where one could obtain some of these new FBW actions would you? I'd love to build up a couple of rifles on these actions. I always regret not getting them when they were available before.

Shop around and you may be able to find a decent #1 in 3006 or somthing like that. Then again I am somewhat biased towards the #1.

I bought my 375 H&H #1 Ruger that has been factory Mag Na Ported for $700.00.

I bought my 257 Roberts #1 Ruger for $325.00.

I bought my Uberti 40 65 high wall for about $500.00 , some trade.

I gave $750.00 for the Pedersoli 45 70 rolling block with a scope.

I just recently passed on a Ruger #3 22 Hornet, as new for $599.00.

You just have to keep your eyes peeled and know that when someone is selling they probably aren't in love with that gun any more and want to move on.
It is always a good thing to know the value of what you are looking at.

Buying and selling is an art in itself and that is where I get the thrill of acquiring the new to me firearm.
If it were me buying a gun for a particular use/need I would expect to pay more to scratch the itch.
Trade or part trade is always a potential if you can offer the seller something he really wants and will allow a premium for your offering.

Acquiring the next gun is a sickness that will persist till the day I die.[I hope].

Has to be a good deal though.

Yesterday morning, browsing in a small sporting goods store in Monroe, WI, I ran across two NIB Winchester Highwalls; one a 'Classic Hunter' in .32-40 and the other an 'LTD' with a 30" oct. bbl. in .45-90. Both were tagged at $1189 but, talking with the guy behind the counter, I got the feeling he had some room to negotiate on a "cash/no trade" deal. If the .32-40 had also been an 'LTD' with a 30" barrel, it would've probably followed home.

Be careful TripHlx the falling blocks come with a incurable disease similar the same caused by lever actions and old milsurps. No known cures and the only relief is to just buy more of them.
