    Baikal 45-70 SxS

Just got it today. Now I have to see what it likes to shoot. I have .458 boolits in 150, 300. 400 and 500gr. I think I will regulate it with the 400 gr. and just see what it does with 150 and 300. I don't think I want to shoot too many 500gr. loads in a light rifle.

I will limit loads to under 31000 psi. That is per manufacturer.

It will be fun finally shooting a double rifle. I have given up on an H&H.

Any suggestions from those who have experience with this gun will be welcome.

Baikal makes some nice looking guns, and ya, they're not H & H's but they should scratch that itch pretty good. Keep us up dated on the testing. I'm curious about how the barrels are regulated. Good Luck and Congrats!

    Swamp,
I have the Sabatti 45-70 sxs and had no problem finding loads that regulated with 300-400 grain bullets. My rifle really prefers faster burning powders such as blue dot and 2400, Trail boss is also a good one. One thing that I learned with this rifle is that given the same velocity, slower powders push the groups apart and faster powders bring them together.
    Good luck and have fun.

Wow! Is this a factory offering from Baikal? I hadn't heard they were selling them. I'd love to have a double rifle. Please post range results when you can.

    No - No - No

I can't afford another project/Fun gun. Still working with the Savage 340's in 30/30, Ruger GS Scout, and an NM M-14.

There just isn't enough hours in a day.

Could one with bad eyes commit heresey and mount a scope on one? Like a Leupy dangerous game 1.5 - 5x?
I came into this world kicking, screaming, and covered in someone elses blood. I plan to go out the same way.

It has an 11 mm dovetail rail on it. A Picatinny rail adapter is available that mounts to the 11mm rail.
Right now I have a rear sight on the way from EAA. I plan to file it to a shallow v like I have seen on the express rifles. I will also replace the post front with a small gold or white bead. The sights on it now are a u-notch rear and post front. Hard for my eyes to line up quick. I need to find out what the front sight threads are before I get a replacement. That info should be coming with the rear that I ordered.

There is a jack screw between barrels:

I have a Baikal IZH 94 12 gauge over a 30-06. It also has the 11mm rail. Weaver 1" rings meant to fit the 3/8" groove on .22lr rifles fit the 11mm groove perfectly. I have an old El Paso Tx. steel tube Weaver 3x scope on mine. Not a real light scope. Have fired several hundred 30-06 cartridges, and several dozen 1 oz foster slugs out of the combo gun with the scope on, and it is holding up fine.

I can only take a few slugs at a time, due to recoil.

The placement of the rail makes scope mounting slightly challenging. The 3X Weaver works because it has no objective bell, so I can slide the scope pretty far back. With another style scope, you may need a extended, or long eye relief.

Hey. I'm new here so I hope I do this right. I have a baikal sxs in 4570. The barrels regulate very well by means of a jack screw. I used a tactical rail mount from air gun source to secure a 2.5x20mm scope. This rail fits the 11mm perfect and holds tight. It has fixed rings in it and also has a rail stop adjustment that screws down into the stop hole on the baikals rail. I've only used factory ammo but I'm getting .75" 4 shot groups center to center at 50 yards. 2 shots from each barrel
The gun is based on the shotgun frame of the ij58 12ga of which I also own. The gun is quick well balanced and shoots like a dream. Should be perfect bear rig for this fall.

How does it group with the inserts? Nice looking gun. Make a nice cape gun 4570 in one tube and buckshot in the other. Thanks for posting the pic

    Thanks!

The SXS shotgun conversion will put two into a 6" circle from 50 yards every time. The inserts have eccentrics at the muzzle that you use to regulate.

My barrels required very little work to regulate. I shoot the Gas Checked, Ranch Dog 425 tumble lube bullet over a stout load of RL7 or 3031. Pushing around 1800fps. It gets your attention on on the back end!

The barrels are very heavy with the inserts so it really settles down for the second shot, and the weight tames recoil a bit. Not sure I'd want to carry this thing a few miles, but that is why God invented Gun Bearers.........

I added the sights from a bunch of parts I had in the junk drawer.

I'm here to tell ya, nothing is more fun to shoot!.......Will be taking it Hog hunting in Texas this winter..........

swamp, congrats on your double. Have you ran any loads throught it yet and if so, what are the results? I believe you'll like the shallow V British type Express for a rear sight. My Reilley has that rear sight and it's quick and exceedingly visible. It isn't an MOA sight but excells at what it was designed for.

I got bit by the double rifle bug 40 years ago but didn't acquire my first until about 20 years ago. All that I could afford was the older ones, mostly hammer side locks in BPE cartridges. I've come to love them. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have enjoyed owning and shooting the few I own. Allow me to recommend Grahme Wright's book, "Shooting the British Double Rifle".

    Swamp,
No experience with this gun but since you have a new passion, how about passing you Snyder stuff to me. You won't have time for both.
