I still think they should have called the 444 the .44 Maximum instead.
If one sits in thundering quiet the soul dies slow instead of yell to the heavens for all to hear and behold the righteous and upstanding and ones of which should be held with tales of woe. By C.A.S. <--- Thats Me lol.

    HI,
When I had mine , many years ago, I read/heard that you could actually shoot a 44 mag in the 444 Marlin safely.
Never tried it, but always wondered if it was true.
Kinda the 38 special/357 mag/357 maximum type thing. or the 44 special/44 mag.
The cases are similar, same dia. bullets, but I believe the case head rims are somewhat different.

If you're talking about the 336T in .44 Mag, they can actually shoot quite well. The below is just a 25-yd 3-shot test group with factory ammo that I did from a poor rest, I haven't yet had the chance to take it through its paces @ 100 yds though.

I read an article in 10th edition Handloader's Digest by Robert Sherwood and got so convinced that I went out and bought one. On shooting .44 mag. in the .444; you can do it but the case in front of the head swells something fierce so wouldn't recommend it as a steady diet. My son used that thing to target practice up a storm from the time he was 12 years old using 12 grains of Herco or 14 grains Blue Dot and a 200 grain Lee RNFP. I used it with Hornady J-words and RCBS 250 gr. SWCGC to flatten wild pigs south of San Jose. It was a little overkill for those pigs.

There's one local to me for $450 with a full length magazine tube. Very tempting.

Mebbe so, 44 Max makes more sense to me. OTOH I think the 357 Max should have made it as a hunting round. What do I know?

    HI,
BEARCOVE, did you say you could not get brass for the 444 & the 357 max?

Most of the time you can not get brass for them. Seasonal runs...

When you can find it it is expensive.

Sports World in Tulsa has two 444SS that are $438 plus change apice. New old stock that are stamped JM on the barrel. Great deals on these. They also have Remington manufactured 1895 GBL for $477.

Most used 444 Marlins go for $450 up around here. With the 444p prices going up every time I take a breath.
